PRE-GAME STORY

TAMPA, Fla. -The Devils did not hold a morning skate due to playing on back-to-back nights. The only lineup update was that forward Curtis Lazar will not be available against the Lightning.
"He'll be evaluated when we get back to New Jersey," said head coach Lindy Ruff, who wouldn't divulge who will replace Lazar.
The Devils can either dress forward Nolan Foote, who was recalled Friday and is a former first-round pick (2019) of the Lightning, or dress seven defensemen.
Turning the Page
The Devils lost their first game in regulation when leading after two periods against Florida Saturday night. New Jersey had a 2-0 lead but surrendered three goals in a 2:30-minute span in a 4-2 loss.
"That's what moment is about in a hockey game. A team can gain momentum. You have to grab it back," Ruff said. "We lost a hockey game. We grabbed momentum. We took a tough penalty that you really can't take. And they grabbed momentum and ended up winning the hockey game."
The Devils don't have enough time to bask on the loss with the back-to-back affairs.
"You have to move on. You can't spend a lot of time with the number of games that you have to play and playing the next night," Ruff said. "We know that we have to make some better plays. If we play like we did in the second period and the first seven, eight minutes of the third period, we can get a lot done."
Process
The Devils knew this stretch of games would be a good test of their will with contests against Carolina, three against Tampa Bay and Florida.
"This is all part of the learning process, being in tight games, being in tough games," Ruff said. "We knew this was going to be a tough stretch going through Carolina, Tampa, Florida, desperate teams. In reality, we got ourselves in a good place in last night's game. It's a game that we had a pretty good habit of being able to close, we didn't."
When it comes down to it, the Devils corrections are more a matter of want than X's and O's.
"Matching desperation," Ruff said. "It's 50-50 battles, it's wall battles, it's first touches. It isn't on system. Sometimes it's your will against the other guy's will."

PREVIEW

DEVILS (44-18-7) vs. LIGHTNING (42-22-6)
TV: 7:00 p.m. ET; Televised on MSGSN
RADIO: 6:50 p.m. ET; Live on Devils Hockey Network
Head-to-Head:
The Devils and Lightning meet for the third time in six days to close out their season series. The first two games between the clubs were earlier this week when the Devils hosted the Lightning. New Jersey lost the first matchup and picked up a single point in the second matchup in a shootout loss.
Sunday marks the first time Ondrej Palat returns to Tampa Bay since signing at five-year contract as a free agent with New Jersey in the off-season.
Devils Team Scope:
The Devils' last win came a week ago against Carolina in a 3-0 victory. Since then, New Jersey has faced just two opponents in three games: Tampa and Florida. In the recent stretch, the Devils have gone 0-2-1 and have been splitting goaltending duties between Vitek Vanecek and Akira Schmid.
Schmid is coming off an excellent performance against the Panthers, despite the devastating third period collapse, a game where head coach Lindy Ruff said he was embarrassed with the way the team wasted Schmid's excellent play.
Mackenzie Blackwood joined the Devils on their current two-game trip as he inches closer to a return, while Miles Wood and Nathan Bastian remained in New Jersey nursing injuries.
Lightning Team Scope:
Brendan Hagel scored a hat trick on Saturday night against the Montreal Canadiens in Tampa's 5-3 win to post a victory in three straight games. The Lightning are currently poised to match up against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the post-season, but the possibility of home ice still remains in their grasp. The Lightning are three points behind the Leafs in the Atlantic Division
This weekend marked the opening of the Lightning Hall of Fame. On Saturday night the opening of the Hall of Fame was headlined by the inaugural inductee's Martin St-Louis, now head coach of the Canadiens, Vincent Lecavalier and Phil Esposito.
Brian Elliott started the Lightning's last game, which should indicate a third straight start against the Devils for Andrei Vasilevskiy.
By the Numbers:
Nico Hischier's shorthanded goal against the Panthers was his third of the season. The last time that a Devils skater earned more than three shorthanded goals in a single season was in 2012-13 when Ilya Kovalchuk recorded four in the shortened lockout season.
Steven Stamkos scored his 30th goal of the season on Saturday night, marking the eighth time he's been a 30+ goal scorer in the NHL.
Nikita Kucherov became the fourth player in Lightning history with 200 multipoint games with two assists against Montreal. He joins Stamkos (281), St. Louis (257) and Lecavalier (212).
