The Devils originally debuted the uniforms during the team's inaugural season in 1982, sporting the green and red color scheme for ten years at Brendan Byrne Arena. The ten-year period between 1982 and 1992 when the team donned the uniforms was marked by a series of notable "firsts" and historical events in Devils history including:
• Jun. 9, 1982: In the Devils first-ever draft, they select Ken Daneyko with its second pick in the first round, 18th overall, and Pat Verbeek in the third round, 43rd overall.
• Dec. 4, 1983: Ron Low and Glenn Resch combine for the first shutout in Devils' history, a 6-0 victory over Detroit.
• Apr. 3, 1988: John MacLean scores the game-winning goal in overtime as the Devils defeat the Blackhawks, 4-3, to clinch the team's first-ever playoff spot.
• Jun. 16, 1990: Devils select Martin Brodeur in the first round, 20th overall, Corey Schwab in the 10th round, 200th overall, and Valeri Zelepukin in the 11th round, 221st overall.
• March 26, 1992: Martin Brodeur and Jim Dowd make their playing debuts. Dowd becomes the first New Jersey-born player to suit up for the Devils.
