PRE-GAME STORY
NEWARK, NJ - The Devils held a morning skate at 11 a.m. at Prudential Center ahead of their final preseason game against the NY Islanders.
Last Showing
Tonight's game is not only the last game of the preseason slate for the Devils, it's also a last opportunity for several players to make an impression before the Oct. 15 season opener. That would include 19-year-old rookies Dawson Mercer and Alex Holtz and player tryouts (PTOs) Jimmy Vesey and Freddie Gauthier.
"I think all players are in a competition for ice time, a role on the team, to make the team," head coach Lindy Ruff said. "All players understand what they have to do.
"The players inside the game know what they need to do. If you're an offensive guy, take advantage of some of those situations. If you're a defender or penalty killer, be that guy that makes an impression."
Mercer and Holtz, both of whom have played three games, have had a noticeable showing despite it being their first NHL training camps. Holtz is tied for the team lead in goals (2), points (4) and plus-minus (+3). Mercer also has two goals and three points with a plus-2.
"It's really nice to be in that last game at home in our own rink," Mercer said. "It'll be a fun game. It'll be another chance to show and prove that I belong here and feel really comfortable and show what I have."
Vesey has two goals and a plus-2 in three contests. Gauthier is a minus-1 in two games. Mark Jankowski, who isn't playing tonight, finished his PTO campaign with two points (1G-1A) in three games.
D Fragments
The Devils blue line has taken a beating through training camp. The pairing of Ty Smith and Damon Severson are currently both out. Smith hasn't skated in nearly a week and his availability for the start of the regular season is unknown. Severson was hurt during a morning skate. Though the team feels he'll be ready for the start of the season, it still remains a question mark.
If neither can go, that would elevate the pairing of Jonas Siegenthaler and P.K. Subban, both of whom have been paired together since the start of camp.
"It's been good. I think we match really well together," Siegenthaler said of working with Subban. "There is a long season ahead of us. There will be changes for sure, but as of right now, I'm happy to play with him. He's a great guy, a good teammate. He has a lot of experience on the ice. I can learn a lot from him."
If Smith isn't ready for the home opener, the Devils will need a defenseman to fill that void. They have several options. One being the recently acquired Mason Geertsen, who was claimed on waivers from the New York Rangers Sunday.
Geertsen, 26, is a swing player that can be used as a forward or defenseman, though he has played on the blue line for most of his career. The Devils initially gave the 6-foot-4, 227-pound left-hander a look up front. But when Subban was tossed from Wednesday night's preseason contest at Madison Square Garden, they slid Geertsen into his spot. He will get a long look tonight on D in the game. He would add an element to the lineup that the Devils are lacking - namely someone playing with an edge that will fight and push the edge.
Anotehr option is Colton White, 24, who has quietly had a productive camp. He has an assist and is a plus-2 in two games, playing some significant time with Dougie Hamilton.
Other left-handed defensemen in camp vying for that opening are Kevin Bahl and Nikita Okhotiuk, though neither are suiting up tonight.
Full 60?
Devils goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood is scheduled to play at least 40 minutes in tonight's contest, though he could end up playing in all 60.
"The plan right now is to get 'Blacky' at least two periods, possibly three," Ruff said, "depending on how he feels."
Blackwood is continuing to work his way back from off-season heel surgery. In his two previous preseason games he's played in one period and two periods respectively.
