"Must Win"

Devils forward Miles Wood didn't mince his words about Saturday's home opener against Detroit.
"We have to bounce back tomorrow," Wood said. "Tomorrow is a must win. If you lose one, you can't lose two and you certainly can't lose three. We have to stop it now. In the past we've had a snowball effect where we were piling up the Ls. It's not OK. Tomorrow is a must win.
"I'm just sick and tired of being on a bad team. That's the thing that stinks the most. Tomorrow is a must win game for us and it's my job to get the guys going for it."

First

The Devils suffered a 5-2 loss at Philadelphia in the season opener. But one big positive was Alexander Holtz scoring his first-career NHL goal (on a power play no less).

The Devils let Holtz lead the post-practice finishing stretch.
Speaking of Holtz's goal. The person on the ice with the best vantage point was forward Dawson Mercer. He was at the side of the post and watched as the puck trickled across the goal line.
"At first I thought it was going wide when it was trickling in," Mercer laughed. "But when it crossed the goal line I kind of jumped up and I think they tripped me, and I fell down. I just hopped up as quick as I could and skated over to him."
