Devils top Oilers, 6-3

The last time the New Jersey Devils and Edmonton Oilers met they were on a different continent: opening the NHL season with a Global Series matchup in Sweden.

Different continent, same result.
The New Jersey Devils earned a 6-3 victory against the Oilers on Wednesday night. Multiple point evenings by four Devils, goals at even strength, on the power play and shorthanded - as well a solid outing from Cory Schneider between the pipes sealed the deal in Edmonton, a victory that ended a seven-game slide for New Jersey.
Here are 10 takeaways from the game:
1. Rookie defenseman Colton White joined the New Jersey Devils just prior to the team leaving New Jersey for Western Canada. Just 72 hours later, White is in an NHL lineup for the first time in his career. He suited up in place of an injured Egor Yakovlev (upper body) and was paired with Steven Santini.

2. The addition of White to the Devils blueline marked the 21-year-old as the 12th defenseman to play for New Jersey this season.    3. One of those 12 defensemen is Will Butcher who played in the 150th game of his NHL/Devils career on Wednesday night against the Oilers. Butcher is sitting on 70 points in his NHL career thus far, with nine goals and 61 assists. This season, Butcher has averaged 19:17 of ice time in a game and against the Oilers had one assist in 21:53 of ice time.
   4. Kenny Agostino opened the games score when his shot took a strange bounce past Edmonton netminder Mikko Koskinen. Agostino, off a rush with a Colton White penalty expiring, took a shot on Koskinen that looked like would end up in his glove. Instead, the puck took an odd bounce off the glove and up over into the net to give Agostino his second goal in as many nights.

The goal was Agostino's fifth of the season off a wrist shot at 7:34 of the first period and was assisted on by Devils captain Andy Greene and forward Kevin Rooney.
5. For Greene, his 18th assist on the year puts him at 22 point on the season to match his point total from the 2014-15 NHL season. That was the last season Greene had recorded more than 20 points in a season.
6. With the Devils trailing 2-1 in the final moments of the first period, New Jersey was awarded their first power play of the game with 52 seconds left in the period. It didn't take long for New Jersey to capitalize on their opportunity - in fact, just 35 seconds. Travis Zajac scooped up a rebound from Koskinen and tapped it home while falling to his knees to tie the game at two with 17 seconds left in the period.

The goal marks the 50th power play point of Zajac's career and his 17th goal of the season. Damon Severson took the shot that caused the rebound, for his 26th assist on the year.
7. Severson added a goal against the Oilers, to start a three-goal second period for New Jersey. At 6:23, Severson had a rocket of a shot from the blueline take flight directly into Edmonton's net directly on the power-play. At that point in the game, Severson's goal put the Devils at 2-for-2 with the man advantage.

The multiple power play effort by New Jersey was the first time since January 31st against the Rangers that the power play has produced multiple goals in a game. Drew Stafford and Connor Carrick earned the assists on the play.
8. Next up for New Jersey, it was Edmonton-native John Quenneville. Fresh off the bench, Quenneville picked up a puck that was close to crossing the blue line into the neutral zone and took a slap shot that cleanly beat Koskinen at 12:49 of the second.

The goal was Quenneville's first of the season and just the second of his career. The 22-year-old's first NHL goal was scored just under two years ago, on March 21st 2017 against the New York Rangers. Kurtis Gabriel and Will Butcher assisted the play.
The Quenneville goal would end the night for Oilers netminder Mikko Koskinen, replaced by Anthony Stolarz. It was only the second time this season New Jersey has chased an opposing goalie from their net and first time on the road.
9. Then it was time for Kevin Rooney to score to complete the three-goal second period for the Devils. Agostino started the play by forcing former Devil Adam Larsson to turn over the puck in the neutral zone, a play in which Larsson spun around and found himself behind the play. Agostino, from the slot, fed an incoming Rooney who took a quick wrister, sending the puck glove side to give New Jersey a 5-2 lead with 3:28 to play in the middle frame.

Rooney's goal completed a two-point night, the first time he's had multiple points in a game in his career. Agostino and Kyle Palmieri assisted the goal.
For Palmieri the assist marked his 50th point of the season. He reaches the 50 point plateau in 67 games played. He's attained at least 50 points on two other occasions in his NHL career: In his first season with New Jersey in 2015-16 and in 2016-17.
10. Blake Coleman has goals in three-straight games, capping off the Devils win with their sixth goal. It so happened to be a Coleman specialty - a shorthanded marker at the 12:06 mark of the third period. Coleman's goal was assisted on by Greene, completing the captain's two-point night.

Coleman's shorthanded marker was his 21st goal on the year and gives him five points in his past five games (three goals, two assists).
