Dawson Mercer joins the New Jersey Devils organization as the team picked the Newfoundland center eighteenth overall in the 2020 NHL Draft. Mercer is a playmaker and goal scorer that will bring offensive power to the Devils organization.
Mercer comes from the Quebec Major Junior League where he started the season with Drummondville and finished the year with Chicoutimi. Chicoutimi added in the center for a Memorial Cup push, but the season was ended by COVID-19 in March. In the 42 games he played in the QMJHL, Mercer had 24 goals and 36 assists for 60 points. This season, Mercer was solid with face-offs, recording a 51.1% success rate.

Mercer's NHL player comparison is the Boston Bruins' Patrice Bergeron and in NHL's Central Scouting rankings he finished as 10th out of all North American skaters. He is listed as a center for NHL Central Scouting but can also play on the right wing.
Brock Otten of McKeen's Hockey says "Mercer plays a lot bigger than his 6'0 frame, excelling below the hash marks and around the crease. Equal parts playmaker and goal scorer, he looks to have the makings of a strong complementary piece on a scoring line."
