Draft Lottery Preview

The 2021 NHL Draft isn't until late July, but the fate of the top-16 selection order will be determined Wednesday night when the league conducts the annual Draft Lottery at NHL Network's studio in Secaucus, N.J. at 7 p.m.
The lottery will consist of two drawings to determine the first- and second-overall selections respectively.
New Jersey finished with the third-lowest points record in the NHL but holds the fourth-overall pick currently due to expansion Seattle Kraken being placed third in order. The Devils have a 10.3-percent chance of winning the lottery drawing, which is tied with Seattle (10.3%) for the third-best odds - behind only Buffalo (16.6%) and Anaheim (12.1%).
The odds for the second drawing will increase on a proportionate basis depending on which team wins the first drawing (Arizona is exempt after NHL took away its first-round pick. If Arizona wins a drawing, the league will re-draw).

The Devils could end up with the first, second, fourth, fifth or sixth picks in the draft. The scenarios are as follows…
Regardless of where the Devils land, they will be getting a great pick. NHL Central Scouting
released its final rankings
of the top North American and European skaters and goaltenders last Thursday.
Among the highly touted are University of Michigan defenseman and consensus Top-5 pick Owen Power, the No. 1-ranked North American skater. The top international skater is winger William Eklund of Sweden's Djurgarden, the same team that Alexander Holtz (the seventh-overall pick by New Jersey in 2020) was a member.
Here is a look at the
Top-10 prospects
in the draft, one of whom the Devils may end up selecting.
Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald will be located at Prudential Center for the drawing and will be discussing the results with the media at the conclusion.
The Devils have won the Draft Lottery three times since 2011. They earned the No. 1-overall picks in 2017 (Nico Hischier) and 2019 (Jack Hughes). They also moved up from eighth to fourth overall in 2011 (Adam Larsson).
The 2021 NHL Draft will be held virtually over two days. Round 1 will take place on Friday, July 23, followed by Rounds 2-7 on Saturday, July 24.
