PRE-GAME STORY
COLUMBUS, OHIO -As the Devils look to end its season series with the Blue Jackets on a win, New Jersey needs to channel the high-octane offense which players like Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier and Jesper Bratt have led.
Since Feb. 1st, the Devils are averaging 4.33 goals for per game, which is third in the NHL during that time frame. Not only is that a huge improvement from the first half of the season, it puts New Jersey in a better chance to win every game. What is working well for the team?
"We have fun for sure, we're strong on the puck winning battles, strong along the boards and we use all five guys too so it's hard to defend," Jesper Boqvist said following Monday's win. "Seeing Hughes and his line going like they are, we want to keep up with them and contribute too."
Another key has been all four lines working well, according to Ruff.
"We've found a little momentum with the lines we're using and guys are feeding off each other," Ruff said Monday. "The continuity, we've got some chemistry. And our ability to finish on real good chances has been better … based on the opportunities you get, I think we're finishing more of our better opportunities and I think that's been the difference."
Elvis Merzlikins gets the start in net for the Blue Jackets tonight and at 6'3 he's quite a big goaltender. One of the keys tonight to scoring against him will be taking his eyes away as much as possible.
"I think if we can create enough traffic so he doesn't see if we're moving the puck east-west, trying to find holes … you have to make the goalie fight to see it. If you can't track it there's a good chance we can make an east-west play, or we get a play going to the net that he doesn't see," Ruff said pre-game Tuesday.
Hughes Continues To Dominate
Although he has only played 33 games this season, center Jack Hughes is having his best performance to date. With 16 goals and 22 assists for 38 points, he's already passed all of his previous season's performances with a decent amount of runway left in the season. He's tied his career high power play production, nine points, in 32 less contests. Not bad for a 20 year old in his third NHL season.
Right now, Hughes is consistently producing night in and night out. In his last seven games played, the forward has 13 points, five goals and eight assists. He's second on the team for goals and points even though he missed significant time with a shoulder injury.
"He's got himself in a nice little run, really skating well," Ruff said following Monday's game. "He just continues to grow. There's plays inside the game that really only he can make. Some of the stuff that he does is because he's so explosive.
"He's shooting the puck a lot better than last year, which we knew that would come. He's the type of player that he's ready to go on the ice every second shift, and that's one heck of an attribute for a player."
The 2019 first overall pick has put up four straight multi-point games which brings him near the top of the Devils history books. If the center picks up multiple points tonight, he will join Scott Gomez and Kirk Muller as one of three Devils to achieve five straight multi-point games. If Hughes continues the run past tonight, he'll set a franchise record. Monday night was Hughes' ninth multi-point effort this season which passes his career high, 8, from last season.
Steady As They Come
Jonas Siegenthaler has received praise from players and coaches alike all season long for his steady, reliable play. The defenseman was traded to the Devils last season, and has been a top-four player during the 2021-22 campaign. Recently, Siegenthaler was paired with Dougie Hamilton in a move to support the returning defenseman who was out with a jaw injury for seven weeks. When asked about Siegenthaler's physicality before Tuesday's game, Ruff commented on his ability to use his reach and size in a productive way.
"He's a big man with great reach. Anytime he combines that with down low physicality he's a tough man to play against," said Ruff. "A lot of time he can absorb a hit and make a play. You see a lot of big defensemen do that - try to direct you in a direction then bump a puck left or bump it right. He's big enough to protect it long enough for our players to come in and get in a lot of our breakouts."
Milestones to Watch For
There's several milestones to watch out for over the next few games for the Devils.
Tomas Tatar is one point away from his 400th in the NHL. The forward is in his tenth NHL season with stops in Detroit, Vegas, Montreal and New Jersey. When Tatar reaches this milestone, he will be the 14th Slovak-born skater to reach that scoring milestone.
Jack Hughes is 10 points away from reaching 100 career NHL points. This might seem a little too early to watch out for; however, Hughes has 10 points in his last four games. At the rate he's going, this milestone will be sooner rather than later.
Devils head coach Lindy Ruff is one win away from tying Paul Maurice on the most all-time wins in a regular season at 775 victories. Ruff has coached 1602 games with the Buffalo Sabres, Dallas Stars, and New Jersey Devils, which is sixth most out of all NHL coaches.
PREVIEW
DEVILS (19-29-5) at BLUE JACKETS (27-25-1)
TV: 7:00 p.m. ET; Televised on ESPN+, Listen on the Devils Hockey Network
Head-to-Head
The Devils and Blue Jackets face-off in the fourth and final game between these Metropolitan Division clubs. The last matchup was on Jan. 8 in Columbus where the home team won 4-3, while New Jersey had picked up a 3-1 win two nights before on Jan. 6. The first game this season was on Halloween where the visiting Blue Jackets won 4-3.
Devils team scope:
The Devils are coming off of a big 7-2 victory Monday night which was the fourth time in the last 30 days, the Devils have scored six or more. Over its last ten games, New Jersey has a 4-6-0 record.
Jesper Bratt leads the Devils in goals (19), assists (31), and points (50) while Jack Hughes is second in goals (16) and points (38). Damon Severson has 23 assists which is second most on the Devils.
Nico Daws and Jon Gillies are the current Devils goaltenders, and each played a game in the Devils last back-to-back set. Like last time, Daws kicked off the consecutive games with the start in net.
The rookie's last two games have been impressive. Last night against the Canucks, Daws had 36 saves on 38 shots while, against the Penguins, the rookie had 37 saves on 38 shots in the 6-1 win. In Gillies' most recent contest, a 8-5 loss to the Blackhawks, the goaltender had 29 saves on 35 shots.
Over the season, New Jersey's special teams have improved drastically. The power play, which was one of the last in the league, is now 22nd overall. Last year, the Devils penalty kill was at the bottom of the standings; however, it is now 11th with an 81.7% success rate.
Another area of improvement has been the team's goal for average. The Devils scored 39 goals in February through nine games and now are averaging 3.08 goals a game. In the most recent back-to-back series, road games against Pittsburgh and Chicago, the Devils put up 11 goals, and have a total of 18 in their last three contests.
Blue Jackets team scope:
The Blue Jackets had a strong February, winning 7 of their 10 games; however, Columbus has dropped its last two, 4-0 to Carolina and 3-2 to Pittsburgh. However, those contests were at the end of a stretch where the Blue Jackets had five games in eight nights. In those last five contests, Patrik Laine has lead his team in points (5) and goals (3) while Jakub Voracek has five assists.
Boone Jenner leads team in goals 22, and points 41 while Voracek leads with 36 assists. Like the Devils, the Blue Jackets have two unavailable goaltenders with Daniil Tarasov out with a recent hip surgery, while Joonas Korpisalo is day to day with a lower body injury.
J-F Berube and Elvis Merzlikins are available to backstop Columbus. Merzlikins has played the most games this season for the Blue Jackets with 33 games, and he has a 18-14-1 record. He's averaging 3.41 goals against and holds a .904 save percentage.
By the Numbers:
Devils head coach Lindy Ruff is one win away from tying Paul Maurice's 775 wins which is sixth on the NHL's regular season all-time wins list.
Tomas Tatar is only one point away from reaching 400 career NHL points. The forward picked up an assist in Monday's win.
Yegor Sharangovich's goal against Vancouver extended his goal streak to four straight which is a career high. He is the only other Devil, besides Nico Hischier, to have a four-game goals streak this season.
Both teams have players who recently hit 100 NHL career games. Jack Roslovic's was on Feb. 27 for his hometown team against the Penguins. This is the center's second season with Columbus and fifth in the NHL. On the Devils side, Yegor Sharangovich's was on Feb. 25. The winger is in his second NHL season, all with the Devils, and scored his 28th career goal during that game.
