The New Jersey Devils claimed defenseman Mason Geertsen off waivers Sunday.
Geertsen, who was placed on waivers by the New York Rangers, has incredible size (6-foot-4, 227 pounds), and likes to play a tough, physical and gritty game.
Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald has made it a key objective to add size to his defensive corps over the summer. He brought in Dougie Hamilton (6-foot-6, 230 pounds), Ryan Graves (6-5, 220) and Christian Jaros (6-3, 222). Geertsen will add size and strength to the organizational depth at the blue line.
