MACL9311

In their return from a nearly two-week road trip, the Devils were back at Prudential Center hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins.
In an important divisional matchup, with the Penguins trying to gain ground on the Devils in the standings, the Devils beat the Penguins in a dramatic fashion.
After Jack Hughes and Sidney Crosby scored in the opening 6:35 of the first period, it wasn't until the game hit overtime that both Vitek Vanecek for the Devils and Tristan Jarry for the Penguins would be scored on.
In a flare of the dramatics, Vanecek was the first goaltender beat in the sudden-death overtime period, but the goal was instantly called off when the refs signaled the Penguins had too many men on the ice.
"I kind of knew right away on their goal that it was not legal," Hamilton said, "I was playing a one-on-one, and all of a sudden the (fourth) guy was there. It's a huge swing for us and we practice our PP a lot lately and just good players and I tried to shoot as hard as I could."
Hamilton wired the puck past Jarry at 2:07 of overtime to lift the Devils to a 2-1 victory in their return to Prudential Center.

- Dougie Hamilton had a shift of 2:55, Hughes's was 2:59 and Haula had a shift of 2:27 while the Penguins were forcing the Devils' hand in the second period.

"I needed an inhaler at some points for sure, I don't know about the others," Haula quipped, "it's just a normal game and we lose Nico there for a little bit and all of a sudden guys are double shifting. But we made it through and can't say enough about him coming back and battling through that." - The Devils matched and passed their shot total of the second period (2) in the opening four minutes of the third with three shots on Jarry. - The third period was free-flowing from the start, it took 7:01 before a first whistle was blown. - Kevin Bahl returned to the lineup for the first time since Jan. 2. He replaced Nikita Okhotiuk, who played limited minutes in Seattle. Okhotiuk had played six straight games.
