The Devils and Ray Shero surprised the hockey world on Sunday night when the club announced that they acquired left-winger Marcus Johansson from the Washington Capitals in exchange for a second-round pick (previously acquired by New Jersey from Florida in the Marc Savard trade, June 10, 2016) and a third-round pick (previously acquired by New Jersey from Toronto as compensation for the hiring of Lou Lamoriello) in the 2018 NHL Draft.

Johansson spent seven years in D.C., totaling 290 points (102g-188a) in 501 career games played. Since making his NHL debut in 2010, the 26-year-old Swede has donned a No. 90 sweater for the Caps. Today, New Jersey announced that Johansson will continue this trend by becoming the first Devil to wear No. 90 in franchise history.
Devils fans have very rarely seen players wear high numbers on the ice. Throughout team history, only 28 players (of 707!) have skated with the No. 40 or higher on their sweater in New Jersey. Among those select few, Doug Gilmour is the lone devil to wear a number in the nineties. Gilmour wore No. 93 after being acquired by the Devils from the Toronto Maple Leafs in a mid-season trade during the 1996-1997 season. During his 83-game stint in New Jersey, Gilmour racked up 20g-55a.

The next highest jersey number ever worn by Devil (prior to Johansson) was Alexander Mogilny. Mogilny was traded to New Jersey from Vancouver on March 14, 2000. The right-winger continued his tradition of wearing No. 89, which he wore since his rookie season with the Buffalo Sabres in 1989. Mogilny played two seasons in New Jersey which was highlighted by a 2000 Stanley Cup victory, and another appearance in the 2001 Stanley Cup Final. Mogilny eventually left New Jersey for a three-year tenure in Toronto before returning to the Devils for the 2005-2006 season where he regained possession of his No. 89 jersey.
