WHAT'S NEXT
The Devils head North of the border to visit the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night, the first half of a back-to-back, with the Hurricanes visiting the Devils on Sunday.
- Timo Meier was moved to the left flank on the Devils first unit of the power play after having a go in the bumper position the last couple of power play opportunities. It's a spot where he was with San Jose and looked more comfortable and able to fire his shot from the top of the circle.
He did also get a few reps in the bumper spot but had some of his better power play looks from the left flank.
- Jesper Boqvist, who was assigned a spot on the second line with Timo Meier and Jack Hughes, is the only player on the Devils roster who has played 50+ games without a penalty this season.
- The first goal of the game was an unassisted goal by Trevor Van Riemsdyk after the Devils failed on multiple occasions to clear the zone of an onslaught of Capitals attempts or gain possession. Van Riemsdyk's shot deflected off of Ryan Graves past Akira Schmid for the game's opening goal.
- Brendan Smith returned to the lineup for the first time in 16 days, paired up against the Capitals with Damon Severson.
- Erik Haula had the Devils opening goal on the team's third power play. At 6:55 of the second period, Haula's goal was a deflection off a shot from Kuemper's stick side, with the puck deflecting off Capitals Alexander Alexyev and in behind Kuemper.
"I just saw a hole there right under the bar," Haula said of his goal, "It just trickled right in. I was looking for my buddy Pally backdoor, but I got a nice bounce."
Haula's game has been picking up as of late with five points in his last two games (2 goals, 3 assists).
"I mean, we've all seen my season so far. The start of the year was kind of crazy and just having a shooting percentage of three is insane, it's almost embarrassing. I'm getting some bounces now and it feels good."
Lindy Ruff joked his play is like climate change... he's hot.
- The goal drew the Devils even at one with the Caps and was also Dawson Mercer's 26th assist this season, marking a new career-high for the second-year player.
- Shortly after, Mercer would add a goal to his stat line tonight putting the Devils up 2-1 for another multi-point night and extending his point streak to 11 games.
Over the course of his streak, Mercer has 11 goals and eight assists (19 points). The streak also tied Jesper Bratt for the longest point streak this season.
- With just over five minutes to play in the second period, Dougie Hamilton and Jonas Siegenthaler had shifts of 1:45 and 1:49 respectively unable to make a change with the five-man unit struggling to retreat from their zone.
- Timo Meier has 13 shots in his first three games as a member of the New Jersey Devils after a six-shot night against the Capitals.
- Akira Schmid earned his first career shootout win.
