He may be in his rookie NHL season, but Devils forward Dawson Mercer is already been afforded the honor of having his jersey retired.
Not his number 18 that he is wearing with New Jersey, but the 14 that he wore playing in the Bay Arena Minor Hockey Association, and with his Tri-Pen Ice AAA peewee and bantam teams. Later today in his home province of Newfoundland a ceremony will be held in the young player's honor.
Mercer grew up playing at the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts and began making a name for himself in his hometown. Now, his name extends well beyond the arena he learned to play in with a standout rookie season in the NHL. Mercer is the only player this season to appear in all 76 games.
