The New Jersey Devils know they control their own destiny. And they let the Rangers know it.

The Devils jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on their division rivals and never looked back. Led by Taylor Hall's four-point night (2g-2a), the Devils put up a five-spot on Henrik Lundqvist. The Devils take the valuable two points in a 5-2 win over the Rangers. New Jersey's magic number is currently two, and on the brink of a playoff berth.

Here are 10 takeaways from the game:
1. It took just 25 seconds of playing time for the Devils to get on the board. Travis Zajac left a drop pass for Blake Coleman who pushed the puck towards the net. While Rangers netminder Hernik Lundqvist made the initial save, Zajac found the rebound and was able to squeeze the puck between the post and Lundqvist's skate to put the Devils up early.

The goal marked the fastest score to start a period for the Devils this season.
2. Hall made it a 2-0 first period lead before the game was four minutes old, scoring on the power play at 3:41. Hall has a nine-game point-streak, an NHL-high. Over tha stretch, Hall has accumulated eight goals and nine assists for 17 points.

3. It wouldn't be long before the Devils struck again on the power play. Will Butcher's rocket of a point shot beat Lundqvist at 10:40 of the first frame, taking a dominant 3-0 lead. Kyle Palmieri and Hall assisted on the goal.

Butcher moved into 9th all-time for points by a Devils rookie with his 43rd point of the season. He passes Viacheslav Fetisov (1989-90), Petr Sykora (1995-96), and Travis Zajac (2006-07). Butcher also has 10 points (3g-7a) in his past seven games.
4. The Devils were back on the board for a fourth time when Butcher scored his second goal of the night at 6:53 of the second period. Again, a point shot beat Lundqvist and marked the Devils third power play tally of the night. Hall and Zajac both assisted on the goal.

The assist for Hall was his third point of the night and second assist. Hall now has 54 assists this season, setting a new career-high in helpers.
5. Three points was not enough for Hall. He added his fourth (and final) point of the night with a penalty shot goal, extending the Devils lead to 5-1 in the middle frame.

Hall's sits at 93 points this season, becoming the fourth player in Devils franchise history to reach the 90-plus point plateau in a season, and first since Zach Parise did it in the 2008-09 campaign (94 points).
6. Keith Kinkaid made his seventh consecutive start, his first-ever at Prudential Center against the rival New York Rangers. He had a relatively quiet night where he turned away 22 of 24 shots he faced.
7. The Devils power play was exactly that - powerful - on Tuesday night. The Devils went 3-for-4 with the man-advantage while the penalty kill was a perfect 2-for-2.
8. With a 5-1 lead entering the third period, the Devils improved their record when leading after two. The Devils are 31-0-2 when leading after two, which is the third best record in the NHL.
9. Blake Coleman, who is having a very successful rookie campaign with 13 goals and 12 assists, played in his 100th NHL game.
10. Brian Gibbons returned to the Devils lineup after sitting out as a healthy scratch against Montreal on Sunday night. Gibbons played on the fourth line alongside Brian Boyle and Miles Wood. Against the Rangers, he played 13:08 and had two shots on net.
The Devils will have the opportunity to clinch a playoff berth on home-ice on Thursday, Fan Appreciation Night presented by Prudential, when the club hosts the Maple Leafs.
