PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, NJ - Wrapping up five-game homestand today against the Rangers, the Devils look to come out with their first win and get back on the winning track.
Devils forward Jack Hughes said that the winless stretch at home or the fact the team has only won one of its last eight shouldn't factor into how the team comes out to play this afternoon.
"None of the games are connected," Hughes stated. "Each game is its own separate game and own separate story. We need a win today to get out of our slump and start winning hockey games."
One factor in the team's slump lately is the inability to score. With only 16 goals to show in those eight games (and 12 in the seven losses), the need to score more goals is apparent.
"Simple things are go to the net, get one off your shin pad, tip one in, rebound, point shots. At the end of the day, we're getting some pretty good looks," noted Hughes. "We're getting pretty good looks. When we get them, we have to score and put them in the back of our net."

Hughes added that while the team only scored once on Thursday against the Rangers and ultimately lost 6-1, overall the level of play wasn't bad in a game where they outshot the opposition 36-19.
"Our game wasn't as bad as the score. We did a lot of good things. Controlled the pace of play for awhile there but let it slip away in the third," he said.
"This afternoon, we have to play a full 60-minute game and play with that same energy."
LINEUP NOTES
Devils head coach Lindy Ruff was asked about the play of Mikhail Maltsev, who is likely to draw into the lineup again today.
"He's good away from the puck. He's strong on the puck when he gets it. He's a hard man to play against because he's a big man. He can get to the net and help great extra opportunities," Ruff began.
"I can see a lot of growth. We've had some young guys that have really skated well and gotten good opportunities. Just with those opportuniites, we need more finish on it."
Mike McLeod was moved to the taxi squad on Friday, likely to not play today. Ruff was asked about him.
"He's part of that group of young players," Ruff said of McLeod, noting others include Maltsev, Yegor Sharangovich, Nate Bastian and Janne Kuokkanen.
"We're trying to keep all these young players involved and he really just falls into that group."

PREVIEW

DEVILS (7-10-2) vs RANGERS (9-9-3)
TV: MSG+ 2 at 1 PM ET
Head-to-Head:
This will be the fourth of eight meetings between the two clubs this season. The Devils took the first two by a combined score of 9-5, but dropped the third meeting on Thursday night, 6-1.
The first meeting happened on Jan. 19, with the Devils winning 4-3. They followed it up with a 5-2 victory on Feb. 16.
The Rangers, however, got the better of the Devils on Thursday night.
Devils Team Scope:
The Devils are struggling with four-straight losses, two to the Capitals and one to the Islanders, as well as the aforementioned loss to this very Rangers team.
The Devils have confirmed they will go right back to Mackenzie Blackwood between the pipes on Saturday, after he was pulled from Thursday night's loss. He let in four goals on 15 shots.
This will be an opportunity for the Devils No. 1 netminder to try and fix his stalled success between the pipes.
Jack Hughes was the lone goal scorer for the Devils on Thursday, bringing his season total to five goals and 13 points. He's one point shy of the team lead, currently held by Pavel Zacha (6-8-14).
Rangers Team Scope:
The Rangers have had some slumps of their own, but have now won two straight after routing the Devils on Thursday.
Artemi Panarin leads the Rangers in scoring with 18 points (5-13-18), however, he's taken a leave of absence from the team. Pavel Buchnevich has 17 (7-10-17). The Rangers have five players with double digits points so far.
Chris Kreider scored a natural hat trick against the Devils on Thursday night, bringing his goal total to 13, the team lead.
By the Numbers:
The Devils and Rangers are similar in many ways, beginning with their record. But their special teams have also had similar struggles. The Devils power play is only converting at 13.8%, which is 28th in the League (as of Friday afternoon), while New York's is 25th at 15.4%.
The Devils went 0-for-4 on the man advantage versus the Rangers on Thursday.
The Devils penalty kill is last in the league, killing at 62.5%.
New Jersey's shot output isn't where you think it would be with their offensive struggles. They're 14th in the league in shots per game (30.3), despite scoring the third least goals in the NHL (47).
Injury Update:
Devils: Hischier (upper body) is week-to-week, Ryan Murray (upper body) is listed as day-to-day
Rangers: Trouba (upper body) is on IR, Kakko (COVID-19 Protocol) is day-to-day, Bitetto (lower body) is day-to-day, Shesterkin (undisclosed) is day-to-day.
