Newark, NJ -The New Jersey Devils today signed defenseman Matt Tennyson to a two-year, two-way contract worth $700,000 each year at the NHL level and $350,000 ($400,000 guaranteed) each year at the AHL level. The announcement was made by Devils' Executive Vice President/General Manager Ray Shero.
Tennyson, 29, spent the past two seasons splitting time with the Buffalo Sabres and their AHL affiliate in Rochester. In 2012-13, the right-shooting defenseman set professional career highs recording 22 assists and totaling 27 points in 60 regular-season games with Worcester (San Jose). Through 275 regular-season AHL contests with Worcester, Charlotte and Rochester, from 2011-19, Tennyson has 27 goals and 77 assists for 104 points and 194 penalty minutes. In addition, the Minneapolis, MN, native has skated in 11 AHL Playoff games.
Prior to signing with New Jersey, Tennyson played for San Jose (2012-16), Carolina (2016-2017) and Buffalo (2017-19) at the NHL level. In his 124 game NHL career, he has posted three goals, 17 assists for 20 points and 32 penalty minutes. In 2016-17, he played in a career high 45 NHL games with the Hurricanes, notching six points (6a). Undrafted, the 6-2, 205lb. defenseman played three seasons, 2009-2012 at Western Michigan University, winning the CCHA Conference Championship and being named to the CCHA Second All-Star Team in 2012.
