The Devils continue their four-game road trip with a second stop in Columbus Tuesday night. The game can be seen on MSG and heard on the Devils Hockey Network, including right here at NewJerseyDevils.com. Puck drop is 7:38 p.m. ET.
Here are some observations from the game...
- Tomas Tatar picked up his 11th and 12th goals of the season against the Wild. It was his first multi-goal game for the Devils, and first multi-goal game since April 12, 2021, while playing for Montreal.
- Tatar's first goal game on a nasty one-timer above the left circle that he ripped into the top corner. The second was a tip from the low right circle that re-directed the puck in. The Devils need different players to step up in games with Jack Hughes out. Tonight, Tatar wore the cape.
"We need different personnel to score," Ruff said. "Tatar was in on some quality opportunities, took advantage of a couple nice plays and was in front of the net."
- Dougie Hamilton continues his marvelous offensive season. He picked up an assist on Tatar's first goal. That extended his scoring streak to seven games for 14 points (5g-9a). It was also the 37th assist of the year for him, tying a career high set in 2016-17 with Calgary.
- Jesper Boqvist made his return to the lineup after being a healthy scratch for four games. Boqvist responded by making a play to set up Tatar's second goal of the game. He cut through the high slot with the puck and laid a perfect drop pass to Damon Severson, whose shot was tipped in by Tatar. Boqvist had only eight points (5g-3a) entering the game. He needs to keep producing to keep his spot in the lineup. And he did just that.
- The Devils switched up their lines during the second period after a sluggish and uninspiring opening frame. The new trios were:
Palat - Hischier - Mercer
Sharangovich - Haula - Bratt
Tatar - Boqvist - Zetterlund
"We got some rush opportunities going up ice, we got some good puck play," Ruff said. "Every line was in on some opportunities and got away from a couple of matchups I think they wanted. So, I felt it helped the club."
- The Devils gave up two goals on re-directed pucks at the crease (one intentional, one lucky). But both the result of bodies not being removed from the front of the net.
