Palat returns before the Devils road trip.

Practice Notes

Devils forward Ondrej Palat (lower-body) and defenseman Colin Miller (illness) joined the team for practice. Palat has been out of the lineup since Dec. 30. It’s his first practice with the team. Miller missed the previous game against Vegas.

The only absentees from practice were forward Michael McLeod and blueliner Cal Foote.

The Devils used the following workflow…

Meier – Hischier – Bratt
Lazar – Haula – Bastian
Toffoli – Mercer – Palat
Willman – Tierney – Holtz

Hughes – Marino
Hatakka – Miller
Bahl – Nemec

Palat Ready to Return

Palat was a full participant as the team’s practice session and is expected to return to the lineup Thursday night at Carolina.

“I thought he looked good,” head coach Lindy Ruff said. “He’s been skating for a while now and got a full practice in. He looks like he’s going to be good to go.”

Palat, who has been skating on his own for some time, felt that he was back to form following the on-ice session with his teammates.

“I felt great to finally get out there and skate with the team, with the boys,” Palat said. “I felt pretty good. It’s back to normal.”

Palat said the lower-body injury was a lingering issue in his past few games played. But after a month absence, he’s feeling good again.

“All good now,” he said.

Palat speaks to the media following practice.

He Said It:

Toffoli on his contract expiring: "From Day 1 I’ve had fun coming to the room every day, seeing the guys and getting to work with the guys. Whatever happens, happens. I’m not really thinking about that right now. I’m thinking about the position we’re in as a team. We’re two points out of a playoff spot right now. These two games are really important for us.”

Road Trippin'

The Devils are headed on a two-game road trip against Carolina (Thursday) and Tampa (Saturday). It’ll be their last two games before the bye week and All-Star break. Both teams are currently ahead of the Devils (51 points) in the playoff standings with 55 points each.

“We’re excited for the opportunity to go on the road and put ourselves in a position to go into the break and enjoy the time off but go off on a high note,” forward Tyler Toffoli said. “That’s something we’re looking forward to. It’ll be a tough challenge for sure.”

The road trip starts in Carolina against the team that eliminated the Devils in the second round of the playoffs. Though, too much time has passed for any lingering discontent.

“If we had played them earlier in the year it may have made a bigger difference,” head coach Lindy Ruff said. “Where we’re at and trying to battle to where they’re at, a number of points away, these two points can really close the gap. That’s more of what we’re focused in on.”

“We’re not going to overthink that,” Palat said of last year’s playoffs. “Everybody knows Carolina is good and hard to play against, how good their PK is. It’s going to be tough, hard-checking game. We have to be ready, especially defensively.

“We’re looking forward to having a good game, hopefully win and get the two points.”

In the second game, it will be another homecoming for Palat, who played his first nine-plus NHL seasons with the Lightning. However, the game doesn’t have the same feel as last year when he played his first game back.

“Last year was the first time. Right now, it feels more like a regular game,” he said.

With the dramatics aside, the Devils’ sole focus is on climbing higher into the playoff race in these next two contests.

“The two games going into the break here are big for us and we’re playing two teams we’re chasing,” Toffoli said.

With McLeod and Foote away indefinitely, the Devils will look to recall players from Utica of the American Hockey League.

"(Which player or players) hasn’t been determined yet," Ruff said. "We’re in the stages of finalizing that."
