The Devils organization signed Rooney to an AHL contract after the end of his collegiate season in the spring of 2016 at Providence. He served as captain and led the Friars to an NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship. He signed an NHL contract with New Jersey during the 2016-17 season.
The forward was most recently called up on January 10, after being in Binghamton since November 2, 2017. He played four games with New Jersey earlier this season on Oct. 20, 27, 30, and Nov. 1.
Rooney's goal was one of eight for the Devils throughout the night, and one of the five goals scored by New Jersey during the second frame.
Rooney's goal was assisted by Brett Seney and Drew Stafford. But his night didn't stop there - the forward also picked up four penalty minutes on the night.
He not only netted his first NHL goal in six games-played, but also received the helmet after the game. The helmet is awarded to the unsung hero of the game, which he wore proudly Monday night.
