Anaheim's lineup featured a mix of NHL veterans, including Ryan Getzlaf, Kevin Shattenkirk and Hampus Lindholm, and some of the organization's young prospects.
Troy Terry (1-1=2), Sonny Milano (0-2=2), Alexander Volkov (1-1=2) and Kodie Curran (1-1=2) recorded multi-point efforts to lead the Ducks offensively. Lukas Dostal and Olle Eriksson Ek split the contest in net as the latter earned his first career NHL preseason win.
Lindholm opened the scoring, beating San Jose netminder Alexei Melnichuk with a long distance shot early in the first period.
San Jose answered later in the frame with a goal from former Duck Nick Bonino.
The teams traded tallies early in the second period, with Alexander Volkov finding the back of the net for Anaheim. Shattenkirk and Curran collected their first points of the preseason with assists on the goal.
Benoit-Olivier Groulx put Anaheim back in front late in the second period, converting a centering feed from Milano. Groulx made his professional debut with San Diego in 2020-21, totaling 29 points (10-19=29) in his AHL rookie campaign.
San Jose responded early in the third period, as Rudolph Balcers tipped home a point shot to even the score again.
The tie was short-lived however, as Anaheim responded with two quick goals to put the game away.
Curran scored the go-ahead goal, finishing a backdoor pass from Terry to put Anaheim ahead 4-3 with 7:57 to play in regulation. Minutes later, Terry converted an opportunity of his own, scoring on a rebound to give the Ducks a two-goal cushion.
Greg Pateryn capped the scoring with an empty-net goal to secure Anaheim's 6-3 victory.
