The Ducks pulled John Gibson for an extra attacker in the final minutes of regulation, which made it a 6-on-4. Ryan Kesler managed to deflect a point shot past the stripe, but a replay showed it was knocked in with a high stick.
With two seconds left on the power play, a turnover at the blueline from Ryan Getzlaf allowed Brandon Saad to skate in and score into an empty net for his second goal of the game.
Gibson finished the game with 35 saves, but only had the offensive support of a Rickard Rakell goal in the second period.
A team that at one point was 5-1-1 in the young season is now 5-4-1 after losing three consecutive games. Tonight marked the season debut for Nick Ritchie, who finished the game with three shots, two hits and one blocked shot in 14:49 TOI. Ritchie skated on a line with Getzlaf and Rakell.
Sandwiched between Saad goals was a tally from Patrick Kane, who scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season. Corey Crawford turned in a 24-save performance for the Blackhawks, who improved to 5-2-2.
The Blackhawks opened the scoring at the 6:24 mark of the first period when Saad pounced on a loose puck in the slot for his first goal of the season. It came on the power play, Chicago's second power play within the first four minutes of the game.
The Ducks responded at the 10:34 mark of the second period when Rakell went top shelf on a breakaway while the clubs were skating four skaters aside. Rakell intercepted a pass in his own zone and sped through neutral ice before roofing a shot over Crawford's shoulder. It ended an eight-game drought, as Rakell hadn't scored since the season opener on October 3 in San Jose.
