Founded in 1980 with a four-team competition held at the Class of 1923 Arena on the University of Pennsylvania campus, the Flyers Cup scholastic tournament has grown into one of the most storied hockey competitions in this region of the country for high school teams and players.

Archbishop Carroll won the inaugural tournament. The 2022 edition will be the 43rd in tourney history. The participating teams were selected on Feb. 27.
The 2022 Flyers Cup tournament will feature 44 teams from the Delaware Valley competing in five divisions: A, AA, AAA, New Jersey/Delaware and Girls. More than 960 players will take part. The tournament gets underway on March 7.
Rob Baer, the Flyers' director of youth and amateur hockey programs, serves as the tournament director for the Flyers Cup.
"The Flyers Cup is a tradition unlike any other in Philadelphia high school sports. There is so much energy and excitement in the local rinks during the tournament," Baer said.
"Some of these players will move up the ladder and compete at higher levels in college and junior hockey, but for many others this is the pinnacle of their youth hockey journey, and we want to make sure it's a memorable experience for them."
Roughly 200 alumni of the Flyers Cup tournament have gone on to play NCAA Division 1 hockey. A few have even later played in the pros.
Baer recently arranged a special surprise for the participating players in the tournament. He obtained jerseys from various local high school teams participating in this year's Flyers Cup. Baer then distributed the jerseys to current Philadelphia Flyers players, who wore them as they entered the Wells Fargo Center prior to Thursday's game against the Minnesota Wild.

Beyond the tournament opening games on March 7, below is a schedule of key days:
March 21: Flyers Cup A Final

March 25 : Flyers Cup Girls Final
