TURNING POINT
The Miller breakaway goal changed the complexion of the game. The Flyers applied very heavy pressure on back-to-back power plays but didn't score. Suddenly, Miller struck and the Rangers took the lead.
MELTZER'S TAKE
1) The Flyers had the game's first two shots on goal and five of the first eight.
At 7:11, the Flyer made it 1-0 on a goal off a counterattack. JVR carried the puck and passed across the ice to Tippett for the entry. Tippett found JVR at the far side post and, on a turnaround shot, he stuffed in for a goal. Tippett had the lone helper.
At 11:23, after a Rangers scoring chance, Frost and Tippett combined to spring JVR up the ice. Halak made the save on van Riemsdyk. Shots were 7-3 Flyers at this point.
The Rangers made a push. Hart had to stop back-to-back chances from Jonny Brodzinski and Sammy Blais. Philly survived an extremely dangerous giveaway by Ristolainen directly into the slot.
Finally, at 16:58, the Rangers drew even at 1-1 on a gorgeous goal off the rush started behind their own net. New York went tape-to-tape. Panarin started and finished it. Mika Zibanejad passed to Barclay Goodrow and then slipped past Frost to find a seam and drive the net, Goodrow delivered a perfect pass and Panarin scored from point blank range at the doorstep. Hart didn't have a chance. The assists went to Goodrow and Zibanejad.
At 18:46, the Flyers went on the game's first power play. JVR retrieved a Frost dump-in drew a holding penalty on Fox. Laughton lost the ensuing faceoff and the Rangers cleared. PP1 gained entry on a cross-corner dump-in but lost a 50-50 battle and New York cleared again. Finally, the power play got set up and generated some puck movement along the perimeter, but DeAngelo had a giveaway. The Flyers took 46 seconds of carryover time into the second period.
2) First period shots on goal were tied at 8-8. Shot attempts were 20-15 Rangers. Scoring chances were 13-11 Flyers (7-4 high-danger edge for New York). Faceoffs were 6-4 Rangers. Noah Cates had a quietly strong first period in terms of puck pursuit and finishing checks.
3) The Flyers were unable to score on the carryover power play time. Later, they had back-to-back power plays on a Ben Harpur delay of game at 4:26 and a Miller cross-check of Sanheim at 6:49. Philly generated strong pressure and puck movement on both the B2B power plays but couldn't put one in the net. Then disaster struck as Miller exited the box.
Miller intercepted the puck from Sanheim and went off on a breakaway. He finished it off at 9:09 for a 2-1 Rangers' lead. The New York lead became 3-1 at 12:24 on another transition play. Goodrow received a pass from Zibanejad and outmaneuvered Hart in close. Panarin received the secondary assist.
Tippett took the puck away from a Ranger at the New York blueline and threaded a pass attempt intended for Frost driving the net. Halak got it first and froze the puck for a stoppage.
At 17:05, Cates nearly got the Flyers back within a goal. That was followed by a Farabee chance. After a faceoff in the New York zone, the Rangers came within a fraction of an inch on a set play. Chris Kreider rushed down the ice and came as close as one can come to a goal without scoring. All but the back edge of the puck crossed before Hart reeled it back. In the ensuing scrum after the whistle, Sanheim was called for cross-checking.
During the ensuing penalty kill, all the chances belonged to Philly. At 17:56, Laughton intercepted a Panarin pass and went off on a breakaway. Attacking with speed, he went to the backhand and beat Halak.
As the kill continued, Cates intercepted a puck and had a scoring chance of his own.
4) Second period shots were 14-11 Flyers. Shot attempts were 23-16 Flyers. Scoring chances were 13-11 Flyers (7-4 high-danger edge for the Flyers).
5) The Rangers had four of the first five shot in the third period including a Trouba point shot with some traffic in front. The Rangers made it 4-1 at 6:22 as Vesey scored on a turnaround shot from the right circle outside the upper hash marks. Trocheck got the assist.
Philly got it right back at 7:53 as York and Sanheim triggered a transition rush. From the top of the left circle, Frost used a defender as a partial screen and fired a shot over Halak's glove. The assists went to Sanheim and York.
With 11:14 remaining, Hart left out a rebound on a long shot by Paranin but covered it. The Rangers had a chance right off the next faceoff.
Noah Cates recorded his fifth credited hit of the game as he rode Chytil off the puck. With 6:59, the Cates line generated puck possession. The Rangers iced with 6:39 on the clock. With 5:30 remaining, Hart made back-to-back stops in Chytil from in-close.
Frost drew a slashing penalty on Trocheck with 3:20 remaining in regulation. The Flyers pulled Hart for an extra attacker with 2:30 left. Trouba scored an ENG from long distance with 2:08 on the clock.
