When all was said and done at the 2023 IIHF World Championships, Team Canada overcame a sluggish preliminary round to capture the gold medal. In Saturday's semifinal game, the Canadians scored three unanswered goals in the third period to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 victory.

In Sunday's gold medal match, Canada and Germany were tied at 2-2 heading into the third period. Once again, Canada rallied for three straight goals when it mattered most. The Canadians won, 5-2.

Veteran Flyers forward Scott Laughton, an alternate captain for Team Canada, assisted on a Jack Quinn goal that tied the Latvia game at 2-2 in the opening minute of the third period in Saturday's game. He subsequently punctuated the two-goal win with an empty-net goal. The next day, Laughton rounded out the scoring with an empty netter to ice the gold medal for Canada.

Overall, Laughton finished with eight points (3g, 5a) and a plus-seven rating in 10 games. The Flyer averaged 18:02 of ice time per game in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Team USA rattled off eight straight wins in the preliminary round robin and quarterfinal match against Czechia. In the semifinal against Germany, the Americans built a quick 2-0 lead but saw Germany tie the score . In the 3rd period, the Americans led the game, 3-2, and were less twere unable to close out a late lead in the final 83 seconds. Former Flyers prospect Marcel Noebels forced OT with a goal at 6-on-5. Team USA subsequently lost in overtime, 4-3.

The same fate befell Team USA in the bronze medal game. David Quinn's team led, 2-1, with less than six minutes left in the third period but were back on their heels. At the 14:21 mark, Latvia's Kristians Rubins forged a 2-2 tie. The Latvians made quick work of overtime. Rubis scored again at 1:22 of overtime to win Latvia's first medal in tournament history.

Flyers prospect Cutter Gauthier was one of the tournament's big stories through the first eight games, as he compiled seven goals and nine points while leading all players in the tournament with 51 shots on goal. Gauthier was relatively quiet in the semifinal and the bronze medal game. He did, however, have a couple scoring chances and three shots on goal in overtime against Germany. Gauthier played only 9:07 in the bronze medal game. He was on the ice for Rubins' OT goal.

Gauthier's Team USA teammate, Flyers/Phantoms defenseman Ronnie Attard, dressed in four of the 10 games the Americans played. He did not play in any of the medal round games. Attard scored a goal against Finland in the preliminary round.
