Devils Retired Numbers

In the storied history of the New Jersey Devils, only five former players have had the honor of seeing their jersey numbers hang from the rafters at Prudential Center. From the beginnings of the franchise, led by Ken Daneyko, to the 2000s with the legendary Marty Brodeur, the Devils have had immense talent in their red and black sweaters.

#4 Scott Stevens

Seasons with the Devils: 1991 - 2005

Number Retired: February 3, 2006

Standing at 6 feet 2 inches tall, Scott Stevens joined the New Jersey Devils on September 3, 1991. Stevens had a reputation in the league as one of the most feared players, earning him the nickname “Captain Crunch”. He and his teammates went on to win the first franchise Stanley Cup for the Devils in 1995. Stevens was later a part of the second and third Stanley Cup winning teams for the Devils in 2000 and 2003. He served as the captain of the Devils from 1992 - 2004, making him the longest reigning captain in team history. Stevens also became the first player in Devils history to have his number retired. Scott Stevens was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007.

#3 Ken Daneyko

Seasons with the Devils: 1982 - 2003

Number Retired: March 24, 2006

“Mister Devil” or “Dano” was drafted in 1982 and played all of his 20 NHL seasons with the New Jersey Devils. A native of Ontario, Ken Daneyko joined the Devils in their inception year, prior to them having a new team name chosen. Daneyko holds two team records for the Devils, leading the ranks in games played, with 1,283, and penalty minutes - by a landslide - with 2,516. Dano helped the team win three Stanley Cup Championships in 1995, 2000, and 2003. Dano was stellar on the penalty kill, lost more than a dozen teeth throughout his career, and never shied away from making the opposition aware of his presence on the ice. He ceremoniously played his last minutes as a professional hockey player in Game 7 of the 2003 Stanley Cup series against the Anaheim Ducks.

#27 Scott Niedermayer

Seasons with the Devils: 1991 - 2004

Number Retired: December 16, 2011

With the third overall pick in the first round of the 1991 NHL draft, the New Jersey Devils selected Scott Niedermayer. Reigning from Edmonton, Alberta, Niedermayer was known for his even-keeled demeanor, effortless skating abilities, and clutch performances. Nieder or Nieds - as his teammates knew him - was a member of the Devils for 13 seasons, 3 of them being seasons the team won the Stanley Cup. Nieds goal in Game 2 of the 1995 Stanley Cup Finals against the Red Wings helped change the momentum of the game, and eventually helped lead the Devils to a 4-0 sweep. To this day, Scott Niedermayer holds an all-time Devils team record for the second-most assists with 364 as a Devil.

#30 Martin Brodeur

Seasons with the Devils: 1990 - 2014

Number Retired: February 9, 2016

Widely regarded as one of the best NHL goalies of all-time, Martin Brodeur joined the New Jersey Devils in 1991. Brodeur spent 21 years with the Devils, and still holds the majority, if not all, of the team’s goalie records. Topping the categories for most games played, minutes, shutouts, wins, best goals against average, and ties/OT, for the team, franchise and a single-season, it doesn’t get much better than Brodeur. Marty was selected 20th in the 1991 NHL draft and helped the Devils win three Stanley Cups in his tenure. Brodeur was so unstoppable that the NHL instituted a new rule that prevented goaltenders from playing the puck behind the goal line, except within the trapezoid behind the net. Brodeur now serves as the Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations for the Devils.

#26 Patrik Elias

Seasons with the Devils: 1994 - 2016

Number Retired: February 24, 2018

In his 20 year NHL career, Patrik Elias followed Dano’s lead by spending all of those 20 years with the New Jersey Devils. A native of the Czech Republic, Elias was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1994 NHL draft. He blossomed to become one of the best NHL players in his time and in Devils franchise history. Elias holds the all-time team records in goals, assists and points, with 408, 617, and 1,025 respectively. In the 2022-23 season, Jack Hughes surpassed Elias’ record of the most points scored in a single season by a Devil; Hughes set the bar at 99, followed closely by Elias’ 96 points.
