PRE-GAME REPORT

LOS ANGELES, CA - The second half starts now.
The Oilers are exactly 50 percent of the way through their 2022-23 schedule with a 21-17-3 record next to their name in the standings and a four-game road trip on the docket starting tonight against the Kings.
They've displayed flashes of brilliance and similarities to the squad that advanced all the way to the Western Conference Final last spring, but they also feel like their opening 41 games left something to be desired.
"We're four games above .500 and certainly I thought we left some points on the table," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said following morning skate at Crypto.com Arena.
"That's been the message to our team is that your first half is done. It's in the rear-view mirror. It's about improving and improving on a daily basis and I've said that a few times. We're looking forward to taking things one at a time on a personal level. If you haven't loved your start to the season, you can build your game out one game at a time, one period at a time, one shift at a time. As we move forward down the stretch here we're not where we want to be, but I believe we're taking steps and in the end it's about playing the right way come game 83."
They may not have loved their first-half performance, but history would dictate the final 41 will be more fruitful. Per the Oilers Radio Network's Bob Stauffer, the Oilers had .537, .607 and .573 win percentages in the first halves of the 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, respectively, before boosting their numbers to .650, .678 and .695 to lock down playoff positions.

"We did it last year," forward Warren Foegele said of the team's second-half surge. "We were kind of in a hole and we found a way to regroup to get wins, and that's what we've got to do now. We've got to take it day by day, and it starts tonight focusing on LA and then we'll move forward after that."
PACIFIC POWER STRUGGLE
The Oilers open their road trip against a Kings squad that sits seven points ahead of them in the Pacific Division standings and held them to a lone goal on 23 shots in their previous meeting on Nov. 16 at Rogers Place in Edmonton.
"We know these guys pretty well," Foegele said of the team they also beat in seven games during the opening round of the 2022 playoffs. "I think for us, it's just being solid in all three zones. We know how they play in the neutral zone. We've got to make it harder for them to defend and I think we'll see that tonight."
Monday's matchup is the first of four in a row and six of seven against divisional opponents, further reinforcing the importance of starting the second half strong.

PRE-RAW | Ryan McLeod 01.09.23

"I think it's really exciting," forward Ryan McLeod said of the schedule. "It's teams we know really well in the division. We play them tons, so it should be a good test. I think it's a good way to start the second half and hopefully get some points back on these teams."
"It's huge," Foegele added. "Every game moving forward is massive, but especially against our division. We need points and we've got to get the wins."
FOEGELE'S RETURN
After getting scratched on Wednesday against the New York Islanders and Saturday against the Colorado Avalanche, Foegele returns to the lineup looking to make an impact.
"It's never fun sitting out," said the 26-year-old who has four goals and three assists in 28 games this season. "I'm excited to come back in, put my head down and work hard."

PRE-RAW | Warren Foegele 01.09.23

"Warren, first of all, is a real professional person, somebody who was not happy about not being in the lineup, which is a good thing," Coach Woodcroft said. "He's somebody who we took out because we felt we needed to go 11-and-7 in the last two games. We got three out of four points in those two games against two very good hockey teams. I think with Warren coming back into the lineup, what that does is allows him an opportunity to show what he can do and how hungry he is."
MCLEOD MOVES UP
Based on morning skate, Foegele will play on the left side of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins with Mattias Janmark on the right. That change bumps McLeod up to left wing alongside Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman, and the young speedster said he's looking forward to the opportunity to play in the top six.
"It's a good opportunity," said the 23-year-old, who has three goals and six assists in 28 games. "I'm obviously excited to move up in the lineup. They're both great players. I think everyone knows what they do and how much they do for the team, so it's going to be exciting to have a chance to play with them."
"He's a versatile player," Coach Woodcroft said of McLeod. "It's part of his player package, what makes him who he is. He hasn't found the offensive success that he's wanted to in the first half. He's got a wide stretch since the last goal he scored.
"For me, putting him on the wing allows us to put a little bit of speed on the wing. We watch the game as it occurs, we make real time decisions, and his versatility allows him to be moved all over. He's a real trusted player for us. He plays on both the power play and penalty kill, but for us to have the type of success we want to have in the second half, he's one of those guys that we need some more out of."

PREVIEW

OILERS vs. KINGS
STREAM: 8:30 p.m. MT; televised on Sportsnet West
Oilers Team Scope
The Oilers head back to the road where they've seen a fair bit of success in the first half of the season with an 11-6-1 record. Edmonton will take on all three California teams, starting with the Los Angeles Kings, before wrapping up the trip against the Vegas Golden Knights.
The Oilers are fresh off a 3-2 overtime defeat to the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Colorado Avalanche, where they lead 2-0 going into the final frame. The Avalanche saw goals by Nathan MacKinnon and former Oiler Brad Hunt, before Cale Makar notched the OT winner. Zach Hyman scored both the Oilers goals on the power play and almost banged in a rebound for a hat trick in overtime, but two posts and a stop by Alexandar Georgiev saved the game for the visitors.
Stuart Skinner was exceptional between the pipes for the Oilers, turning away 43 Avalanche shots in the loss. The 24-year-old was also in net the last time the Oilers and Kings got together, allowing two goals on 31 shots in a narrow defeat to Los Angeles.
The Kings were exceptional defensively at Rogers Place back on Nov. 16, holding Edmonton to just 23 shots and one power-play opportunity. The lone goal for the Blue & Orange was scored by Hyman for his eighth of the season.

Kings Team Scope
The Kings start a four-game home beginning with the Oilers on Monday night. They are coming off a very successful visit to Los Vegas, where they dismantled the Golden Knights by a 5-1 score at T-Mobile Arena. It was the Kings big offseason acquisition who did the majority of the damage in Kevin Fiala, who notched a hat trick on the evening. The 26-year-old currently leads the Kings in scoring with 42 points (13G, 29A) in 43 games since being acquired from Minnesota for prospect Brock Faber and a first-round pick.
The Kings also saw goals by Viktor Arvidsson and Matt Roy, while Phoenix Copley turned aside 19 shots in the victory.
"We were prepared to play the right way. Vegas presents a lot of different challenges," Los Angeles Head Coach Todd McLellan said after the game. "We played the way we wanted to and the game plan we wanted to. That was player one through 20. Definitely a good team win."
Los Angeles left Rogers Place back on Nov. 16 with a 3-1 victory, courtesy of a Trevor Moore hat trick performance and a three-assist night by Arvidsson. Cal Peterson started the contest for the Kings and didn't have a very busy night with Los Angeles' defence stifling the Oilers attack. The goaltender only had to make 22 stops for the early season victory.
