The Community Hero for October 2024 is NYPD 1st Grade Detective Fred Washington
Detective Fred Washington is a 1st Grade Detective in the NYPD Community Affairs Bureau. With 19.5 years of experience, he is breaking barriers and building bridges across the city improving police and community relations one borough at a time. Detective Washington has organized a city-wide, five-borough, community baby shower twice a year. The NYPD community baby shower provides essential resources and support to expectant mothers and families in need. Witnessing the challenging face by expectant mothers firsthand inspired him to launch the NYPD community baby shower in 2021 with the first-ever event held in the Bronx. This initiative has involved into a five-borough tour offering vital resources – from diapers to support groups – in a welcoming one-stop shop for pregnant and families in need. In 2024 alone 11,171 women registered across all five boroughs.
