After collecting their first win on home ice on Saturday night at UBS Arena, the New York Islanders are looking to keep the momentum going as they travel to Detroit to take on the Red Wings on Tuesday night for the second time this season and this month.
In their previous meeting on Dec. 4, the Red Wings defeated the Islanders 4-3 in overtime. The Islanders' received scoring from their special teams with a shorthanded goal from Cal Clutterbuck and two power-play tallies from Oliver Wahlstrom. Detroit's win was backed by regulation goals from Filip Hronek, Sam Gagner and Givani Smith while Moritz Seider buried the OT winner. Ilya Sorokin made 26 saves on 30 shots in the loss, while Alex Nedeljkovic made 20 saves on 23 shots in the win.
The Islanders enter Tuesday's matchup coming off a big 4-2 win over New Jersey on Saturday night, which marked the club's first-ever victory at UBS Arena. Noah Dobson scored on the power play, Andy Greene and Jean-Gabriel Pageau found the back of the net at even strength and Zach Parise netted the game winner with a shorthanded goal. Sorokin made 30 saves on 32 shots.
Since defeating the Islanders in overtime on Dec. 4, Detroit has subsequently lost its last three games. Their most recent loss came at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche on Friday where they were beaten 7-3. Vladislav Namestnikov, Joe Veleno and Filip Hronek (power play) scored, while Thomas Greiss made 4 saves on 7 shots through 10:49 before being replaced by Nedeljkovic, who made 36 saves on 39 shots.

• Dobson scored his third goal in the last four games and his first power-play goal of the season to put the Islanders' on the board. The 21-year-old defenseman leads the team's blueline in scoring with eight points (3G, 5A).

• Greene scored his first goal of the season while Pageau buried his fourth goal of the season and his third goal in the last four games.
• Parise deposited his first goal of the season as he provided the Islanders with the game winner. It was a special goal for the former captain of the New Jersey Devils to do so against his former club, while registering his first goal as an Islander. It hit even closer to home as he scored the goal on what would have been his father, J.P. Parise's 80th birthday. Parise senior played with the Islanders from 1974-78.
• Mathew Barzal dished out two assists and extended his point streak to six games where he has compiled nine points (1G, 8A) in that span. Barzal leads the Islanders in scoring with 17 points (5G, 12A) through 23 games.
• With two assists, Oliver Wahlstrom extended his point streak to three games where the winger totaled six points (1G, 5A) during that stretch. Wahlstrom ranks second behind Barzal in scoring with 13 points (8G, 5A).
• Sorokin made his 17th start of the season and improved his record to 7-6-4. The Russian netminder has a 2.49 GAA, a 9.25 SV% and three shutouts. Sorokin has won his last two starts.
Brock Nelson and Casey Cizikas drew back in the lineup. Nelson had been sidelined since Nov. 21 with lower-body injury. Cizikas drew back in the lineup after being placed in COVID-19 protocols on Nov. 27.
• Defenseman Robin Salo returned to the lineup for the first time since Nov. 26, drawing in place of Sebastian Aho.
Anthony Beauvillier was a healthy scratch on Saturday night. Matt Martin also missed Saturday's contest - his fourth in a row - as he continued to manage a nagging injury.
• The Islanders' power play now has five PPG's in as many games. In the NHL, the Islanders' man advantage ranks 27th overall at 16.1%.
• With Parise's shorthanded goal, the Islanders now have two shorthanded goals this season. Their penalty kill ranks sixth in the NHL at 83.6%.

• Namestnikov scored his ninth goal of the season and now has 15 points (9G, 6A) through 28 games.
• Veleno notched his third goal of the season and now has four points (3G, 1A) through 14 games.
• Hronek scored his third goal of the season and has 15 points (3G, 12A) through 26 games. The goal was his first on the power play.
• Greiss made his 12th start of the season. The former Islander netminder has a record of 5-6-0, a 3.67 GAA and a .889 SV%.
• Nedeljkovic has a 8-6-3 record, a 2.81 GAA and a .915 SV%.
• Detroit's rookies Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider continue to dominate among fellow first-year players in the league. Raymond boasts the most points among rookies with 24 (10G, 14A) - he also is the scoring leader among the Red Wings - and goals with his 10. Seider's 19 points (3G, 16A) are ranked third among NHL rookies and third among Detroit's roster.
• Raymond's 10 goals are tied with Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin for the most among the team.
• The Red Wings are currently averaging the sixth-most goals against per game in the NHL 3.43.
• Detroit's power play ranks 26th overall in the league at 16.2% while their penalty kill ranks 25th overall at 76.5%.
• After missing five games due to being placed in COVID-19 protocols, forward Tyler Bertuzzi will be eligible to return to the lineup against the Islanders on Tuesday night. Bertuzzi practiced on Detroit's top line on Monday, per the team's official website. The 26-year-old has 18 points (9G, 9A) in 20 games this season.
