Greiss notches 35-save shutout in Isles' 3-0 win

The New York Islanders won their fifth straight game on Saturday night and tied a franchise record, as they shut out the New Jersey Devils 3-0 at Barclays Center.
Thomas Greiss made 35 saves for his first shutout of the season (ninth in his career), while Jordan Eberle, Brock Nelson and Scott Mayfield scored for the Islanders. In the process - and with 50 alumni watching - the Isles tied a franchise record on Saturday night, winning their first six divisional games for the first time since 1982-83.
"The reason we're having success is everyone is committed, everyone is working and everyone is accountable to each other," Head Coach Barry Trotz said of his team's streak. "When the games get ramped up we haven't been too small about them… We haven't flinched."

GREISS CAPS GREAT WEEK WITH SHUTOUT:

It's been an exciting week for Thomas Greiss.
The Isles goalie picked up his 100th career win on Sunday in Carolina, dished out a game-saving poke check on Sidney Crosby on Thursday and capped it with a 35-save shutout vs the Devils on Saturday.
He debuted a new fisherman mask
in a relief appearance on Tuesday as well.
"He's been good, the last two games especially when he's been in there," Trotz said.
Greiss was solid when he needed to be on Saturday, bailing the Islanders out on the limited times they allowed odd-man rushes. The marquee save was a breakaway stop on reigning MVP Taylor Hall in the second period, but the goalie credited his team for making it a relatively straightforward night.

"We played a really tight game, they didn't have much from the slot or really had any rebounds, it helps me out and makes me look good," Greiss said.
Aside from a pair of early penalty kills, the Islanders prevented the Devils from getting extended zone time and when there were odd-man rushes, Greiss was there to shut the door.
"They definitely had chances and Greisser was there to stop them, but the biggest thing was no odd-man rushes and I can't really think of too many quality chances," Eberle said. "We just want to keep building off this."

EBERLE, NELSON, MAYFIELD SCORE:

After killing off a pair of penalties early, the Islanders made the most of their first man advantage, with Eberle potting a rebound at the left post. Eberle's goal was his third in three games.
Armed with the lead Isles were content to play defensive hockey and wait for the counterpunch, forcing the Devils to open up their game in the third period. When they did, Nelson was there to strike, keeping and shooting on a two-on-one rush to make it 2-0 with five minutes to play.
Nelson's goal was his team-leading seventh of the season, but Trotz was just as impressed with Nelson's play against reigning MVP Taylor Hall. Nelson was matched up against Hall, who had his nine-game point streak snapped on Saturday.
"He was excellent," Trotz said. "That whole line was excellent. I love the fact that Brock continues to grow and grows in confidence and growing in his role. I have a tremendous amount of trust [in him]. He's one of the better two-way players. He's cerebral, he does things the right way, he has a real good skill set and when the game is on the line, he can put it away."
Scott Mayfield sealed it with an shorthanded empty-netter with 13.6 seconds to play for his second goal of the season.

BAILEY EXTENDS POINT STREAK:

Josh Bailey extended his point streak to eight games with assists on Eberle and Nelson's goals. Bailey leads the Islanders with 15 points (3G, 12A) in 13 games this season.

BOYCHUK PLAYS 600TH GAME:

Johnny Boychuk played in his 600th career NHL game on Saturday. Boychuk has played 279 games with the Islanders, 317 with the Boston Bruins and four games with the Colorado Avalanche.
