Hockey Fights Cancer month has traditionally fallen during November and while the New York Islanders did their part to support the fight against cancer in the fall, the marquee event was put on hold.
On Saturday night, the fight against cancer will take center stage, as the Islanders hold their Hockey Fights Cancer game, supported by Northwell Health, at Nassau Coliseum when they take on the Boston Bruins.

"The biggest thing is awareness," Head Coach Barry Trotz said. "A majority of the families, at least in North America, know someone or has been touched by someone, either through friendship or relationships, that has cancer. It's something that we have to get out of the medical system so that we can get a cure for it. It's a great initiative to bring awareness to."
While fans won't be in the building, the game will have the familiar hallmarks of a traditional Hockey Fights Cancer night. Islanders coaches and broadcasters will wear Hockey Fights Cancer ties and pins, and lavender-sponsored dasherboards will be installed. One of the in-arena tarps will feature Hockey Fights Cancer branding as well.
That's just a few of the many activations taking place around HFC night. See below for a list of fundraisers, charities and hockey fights cancer initiatives.

Virtual Puck Drop:

In lieu of a cancer survivor dropping the puck at center ice before the game, the Islanders have invited 11-year-old Siobhan O'Sullivan to participate in a virtual puck drop on Saturday. O'Sullivan is a sixth grader from Rockaway Beach, who was diagnosed with leukemia in May 2019.
Her battle with cancer included a few weeks in the hospital, over 40 rounds of chemotherapy and taking a variety of medication. In January of 2020, O'Sullivan started in her final phase of treatment, which is maintenance, and will continue through July 2021. There have been a few bumps along this journey, but her strength and perseverance have helped her make it to this point with a smile on her face.
Support from outside agencies like Northwell Health and the Islanders have helped bring joy and happiness on days when she really needed it. O'Sullivan loves the Islanders and met Matt Martin, Scott Mayfield and Casey Cizikas when she was at Cohen Children's Medical Center. She's also been involved in the Bailey's Buddies program, coming to a game as a guest of Josh Bailey, who she met after the game and was given an autographed jersey.
