The New York Islanders defeated the Washington Capitals 2-1 in a shootout on Wednesday night at Capital One Arena.
Pierre Engvall scored for the Islanders in regulation, while Conor Sheary scored for the Capitals through 60 minutes of play. Bo Horvat and Kyle Palmieri buried goals in the shootout for the win, while Ilya Sorokin stopped 2-of-3 shootout attempts.
Sorokin made 25 saves and allowed one goal or fewer for the 21st time of the season.
The Islanders have 87 points and protected their first wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Florida Panthers took a 3-2 OT win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night, as they sit one point out of a playoff spot. The Islanders are six points clear of the Panthers, but Florida has one game in-hand. The Pittsburgh Penguins were idle on Wednesday and have 82 points in the second wild card spot.
