A big third period powered the New York Islanders to a big 4-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday afternoon.
The Islanders scored four third period goals, getting a pair from Anders Lee, as well as goals from Zach Parise and Kyle Palmieri (PPG), breaking through after controlling much of the play through the opening 40 minutes.
Parise and Lee scored two goals in 2:28 seconds to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead early in the third period to turn the momentum, with Palmieri and Lee scored goals 1:40 apart late in the period to seal it.
Dylan Larkin's power-play goal was Detroit's lone tally.
With the win, the Islanders (72 points) now have a seven-point cushion over the Red Wings (65 points). Detroit still has three games in hand, but with Saturday's win, the Islanders would still be ahead of Detroit, even if Detroit wins all three of their games in hand.
