Rapid Recap: Islanders 7, Ducks 1

The New York Islanders put an exclamation point on their first win of the season, routing the Anaheim Ducks 7-1 at UBS Arena.
The Islanders got five goals from their blue line, with Scott Mayfield and Robin Salo each scoring a pair, while Noah Dobson found the back of the net for a second straight game. Oliver Wahlstrom and Anthony Beauvillier each had a goal and an assist, while Mathew Barzal had a pair of assists. Anders Lee had a game-high three points.
The Islanders seven-goal outburst was most Islanders goals in a game since an 8-4 win over the Washington Capitals on April 1, 2021.

THE SCORING:

First Period:
10:34 - NYI 1, ANA 0 - Anthony Beauvillier strips the puck off a Ducks player and Scott Mayfield leads a rush up the ice. Anders Lee passes to Mayfield in front and the defenseman jams it home on the rebound.
12:08 - NYI 2, ANA 0 - Noah Dobson's point shot deflects of Kevin Shattenkirk's stick at the far side of the net for his second goal in as many games. Matt Martin with the assist.

Second Period:
5:34 - NYI 3, ANA 0 - JG Pageau creates a turnover in the Islanders' defensive zone and springs Oliver Wahlstrom on a breakaway. The young forward pulls a forehand-backhand deke to beat Gibson.
12:55 - NYI 4, ANA 0 - Scott Mayfield scores his second goal of the game, breaking up a chance in the Islanders defensive zone and getting the puck to Mathew Barzal before joining the rush. Barzal stops inside the Ducks' line and dishes back to Mayfield who hammers home his second of the game.
14:27 - NYI 5, ANA 0 - Anthony Beauvillier scores his first goal of the season, taking a feed from Ryan Pulock off the rush and beating a sprawling Gibson.

Third Period:
1:29 - NYI 5, ANA 1 - Troy Terry gets the Ducks on the board. Terry snaps a wrister high-glove on Sorokin from the slot. The goal is unassisted.
13:03 - NYI 6, ANA 1 - Robin Salo scores the first of his two goals, beating Anthony Stolarz from the point. Mathew Barzal and Anders Lee with the assists.
19:00 - NYI 7, ANA 1 - Salo scores his second goal, putting a shot into traffic that gets through Kyle Palmieri and Stolarz. Wahlstrom and Nelson with the assists.

NOTEBOOK:

Oliver Wahlstrom made his season debut with a goal and an assist, two shots and two hits in 9:33 TOI.. Cal Clutterbuck made his season debut with four hits, three shots on goal and five total attempts... Kieffer Bellows and Nikita Soshnikov came out of the lineup, while Sebastian Aho was placed on IR retroactive to Oct. 8... Scott Mayfield recorded the first two-goal game of his NHL career... The Islanders improved to 5-0-2 in their last seven home games vs Anaheim... Mayfield (4SOG, 2MS, 2A/B) and Dobson (3SOG, 5A/B) had a team-high eight shot attempts each.

GOALTENDING BATTLE:

Ilya Sorokin stopped 22 of 23 in the win.
John Gibson allowed five goals on 27 shots in 40 minutes of play.
Anthony Stolarz stopped nine of 11 in relief of Gibson.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

The Islanders power play went 0-for-4, while the penalty kill was a perfect 4-for-4.
