Sorokin Agrees to Terms on a One-Year Contract Extension

The New York Islanders announced today that goaltender Ilya Sorokin has agreed to terms on a future one-year contract for the 2020-21 season.

Sorokin has played the last eight seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League (Russia) with CSKA Moscow (six seasons) and Novokuznetsk Metallurg (two seasons). The 2014, third round (78th overall) selection of the Islanders has an overall record of 134-64-22, a 1.70 GAA and a .930 save percentage in 244 games played in the KHL.

In 2018-19, Sorokin won the KHL Gagarin Championship with CSKA Moscow, going 16-4 in the playoffs. He posted a 1.19 GAA and a .947 SV% while earning five shutouts. He was named the 2019 KHL Playoff MVP. That same regular season, Sorokin played 40 games and had a 28-6-4 record with a 1.16 GAA, and a .940 SV%, while posting 11 shutouts, the most he's earned in a single season.

Sorokin has earned numerous accolades in the KHL. The Mezhdurechensk, Russia native was selected to the KHL All-Star Game the past five seasons, finished with the best GAA (1.06) in 2015-16 and named the best goaltender in the league that same season.

Internationally, Sorokin has represented Russia at four World Championships (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), winning bronze is each of the 2016, 2017 and 2019 tournaments. He represented Russia at the World Junior Championship in 2015 and won a gold medal with OAR (Olympic Athletes of Russia) at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
