A dramatic comeback extended the 2022 IIHF World Hockey Championship for the defending champions from Canada on Thursday, while the group from USA upset one of the preliminary round's top teams in an exciting day in Finland.

CANADA 4, SWEDEN 3 (OT)
Through 40 minutes, Canada found themselves down 3-0 to Sweden with 20 minutes left.
Carl Klingberg, who played 11 games for the Winnipeg Jets between 2011 and 2015, scored the game's opening goal just 1:27 into the contest. That was followed by William Nylander's tally at 7:04 of the first, and Max Friberg's marker 8:23 of the second.

Canada got right to work in the second, as Ryan Graves put the defending champs on the board 1:21 into the third. His point shot, with Jets forward Adam Lowry posted up in front of Linus Ullmark, found a way through traffic to make it 3-1.
It stayed that way until the final two minutes. Rasmus Dahlin got called for delay of game, putting the Canadians on the power play. That opened up space for Jets forward Pierre-Luc Dubois to hammer a one-timer from the right circle, beating Ullmark on the glove side to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Dubois wasn't done there, though.
After Matt Barzal tied the game at three just 30 seconds later, the Canadians went back on the power play just 25 seconds into three-on-three overtime.
Canada pounced on the four-on-three man advantage. From the right circle, Dubois found Barzal in the slot. Barzal hesitated to freeze Ullmark, then slipped a pass to his left, where Drake Batherson was waiting. His one-timer from the left circle beat Ullmark, giving Canada a 4-3 overtime win to cap off the incredible comeback.
With a goal and an assist, Dubois leads the tournament in goals with seven and is second in points with 12 through his eight games.
Despite not getting on the scoresheet, Lowry played 15:38 and had two shots on goal.
Canada now plays Czechia in the semi-final on Saturday.

GERMANY 1, CZECHIA 4
Leon Gawanke's World Championship came to an end on Thursday, but the young defenceman from the Manitoba Moose gave it all he had.
The 22-year-old Manitoba Moose defenceman, who turns 23 on May 31, had a team leading 24:46 of ice time in the 4-1 quarterfinal loss to Czechia.
Gawanke played nine of the 20 minutes in the second period, and followed that up with another 8:43 in the third.
But Czechia - and their power play - proved to be too strong on this day, with first period goals from David Pastrnak and Roman Cervenka to make it 2-0, a lead that David Krejci added to in the second - with Pastrnak and Cervenka picking up assists.
All three of those came on the power play.
Moritz Seider cut into the deficit with 6:12 left in regulation, but Jiri Smejkal restored the three-goal cushion on an empty netter with 1:50 remaining on the clock.

USA 3, SWITZERLAND 0
Through the preliminary round, Switzerland weas near perfect. Of the 21 possible points available, they earned 20.
However, once the elimination games begin in the medal round, those points are only good for seeding - and not much else. When the puck drops on the quarterfinal, everyone's backs are against the wall.
The Swiss fell by a score of 3-0 to the USA - who finished fourth in Group B - and are now eliminated.
Jets defenceman Nate Schmidt didn't record a point in the game, but was a key part of the shutout victory. He had 24:17 of ice time, including a team-leading 9:38 in the final period as the USA tried to nail down the win.
Ben Meyers scored twice - the game's opening goal 11:59 into the first, and a third period goal with 5:54 remaining in regulation - and Adam Gaudette scored the other in the American win.
Jeremy Swayman was solid in goal, making 33 saves (29 of them in the final 40 minutes), and was named Player of the Game for the USA.
The USA now plays Finland in the semi-final on Saturday.
