Three members of the Winnipeg Jets are participating in the 2023 IIHF World Hockey Championship, which is being hosted in Tampere, Finland and Riga, Latvia.
Of the three - a list that included Nikolaj Ehlers, Nino Niederreiter, and Dylan Samberg - only Samberg had a chance at a medal. He along with his USA teammates were in action in the semi-final on Saturday against Germany.
USA 3, GERMANY 4 (OT)
In heartbreaking fashion, the United States saw their dream of playing for a gold medal come up short against Germany.
The Americans had a 2-0 first period lead in the opening 3:56 of the contest, but Germany erased that in the latter half of the first period on goals from Frederik Tiffels and Maksymilian Szuber.
Once again, the USA would grab the lead, this time on Michael Eyssimont's second period tally, making it 3-2 heading into the final frame.
The Americans almost reached the final buzzer, but with 1:23 remaining in regulation, Marcel Noebels tied the game for Germany once again.
It was a goal that forced overtime, and set the stage for Tiffels' second of the contest. He flew down the left wing side and snapped home the winner by beating Casey DeSmith over the left shoulder 7:32 into the extra frame.
Samberg didn't register a point, but had the second most ice time among American skaters at 22:12.
He and his teammates will play for bronze against Latvia on Sunday.
