The importance of growing the game
"Diversity and inclusion are certainly important. You want everyone, whether they are playing the game of hockey or a fan of the game of hockey, to feel comfortable being who they are, what they believe in, their sexual orientation. I think visibility matters. We've come to the decision we're going to wear it. I think that's a positive."
Dylan DeMelo
Why is it important to you?
"For me, personally, I think this is something that is really important with the way the world is, making it inclusive, making it important for everybody. For me, I've got friends that are in the community so for me it's really important. I know the struggles they've been through and to make it inclusive for everybody it's very important for me, so I'm really happy that we're doing it. We're a top-class organization here and I think the fans are going to enjoy it, everybody's going to have a good night tomorrow."
Any feedback from those friends?
"To be honest, my friends aren't really the biggest hockey fans. They're just kind of more fans of me, so I'm not sure if it's really on their radar too, too much, to be honest with you. I think I have a great relationship with my friends that are in the community and they look at me as Dylan DeMelo, not the hockey player, so I think that's the most important thing."
On the team's full buy-in:
"Obviously, we're trying to make this game for everybody, make it inclusive for everybody. Nights like this is a great way to build that. I'm happy that we're doing it here tomorrow night. I think it's an important night and something that I look forward to every year so I'm happy we're doing it."
Josh Morrissey
On the team's buy-in:
"I think it's nice to have that unity within the locker room and organization, in terms of wanting to support (the LGBTQ community). Hockey is for everyone and Pride Night tomorrow, so, yeah, it was great."
Why do you support it?
"Personally, I feel people in the community and whatnot, through Pride and other initiatives and people that are supported by our Pride Night, deserve to be recognized and be supported. I truly believe hockey is for everybody and everybody should feel comfortable coming to the rink, as a spectator, player, fan, anything like that. It's bigger than anything small and I just feel strongly about supporting it and believing that everyone should be supported in what they do."
