Marking a pivotal moment in realizing Toba Centre’s vision for supporting young victims of abuse, Toba Centre’s much-anticipated new child advocacy centre officially opened its doors in September.

“We built this centre for the community, and the community has really rallied around us,” said Christy Dzikowicz, Executive Director at Toba Centre for Children & Youth. “This building gives us an opportunity to see these kids from investigation and right through – it’s changing their story.”

The new facility provides a calming and welcoming space meant to ease the difficult experience of reporting abuse as much as possible. All critical services that a family would work with are together under one roof, improving the navigation of interactions with child protection, medical, police and criminal justice.

Dzikowicz acknowledges the reality of child abuse is a difficult topic, but that amplification of this issue through the Winnipeg Jets and captain Adam Lowry as a Toba Centre ambassador has opened up the conversation and strengthened community support.

“This is an issue that is not talked about, and having abuse in the shadows is where abuse thrives,” said Dzikowicz. “But having members of our community like Adam Lowry and the Winnipeg Jets talk about this issue using their platform, we begin to celebrate the resilience and strength of what these kids go through.”

Lowry has been engaged in the mission and work of Toba Centre since spring 2022. Since then, he has provided a voice for the organization and the kids they are supporting. He interacts regularly with Dzikowicz and the Toba Centre team, he is a frequent visitor to their office and, as well as lending his voice to PSAs, he has had an even more personal impact getting to know some of the kids Toba Centre supports.

“Throughout my career, I’ve received tremendous support from my community,” said Lowry. “Being able to lend my voice and platform, to shed light on the great work that Toba Centre does is my way of giving back to the community.”

The Winnipeg Jets are set to host their second annual Child Advocacy Game on Tuesday, Oct. 24 when they will welcome several organizations and individuals involved in child abuse response and honour their efforts to protect, heal and seek justice for victims.

“With the centre opening, that doesn’t mean our work here is done; it means we have a meeting place to continue helping children in need,” said Lowry.

Fans can join in the support of Toba Centre by engaging in the conversation, wearing blue in support of #GoBlueToba and by celebrating their work at the Winnipeg Jets Child Advocacy Game on Oct. 24. Tickets are available at WinnipegJets.com/TICKETS.
