WINNIPEG, Oct. 8, 2021 - To mark the amazing work of healthcare professionals in Manitoba and their dedication to our province throughout the pandemic, Mark Scheifele and his family, along with the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club, will honour deserving healthcare workers at each home game throughout the 2021-22 season through the Scheif's Healthcare Heroes initiative, as a thank you for their commitment to our community.
For more than 18 months, healthcare workers across Manitoba and around the world have continued to deliver health services in the most difficult of circumstances. They have set aside their own fears and fatigue, working long hours in COVID-19 testing sites and laboratories, personal care homes, ICUs, vaccine clinics and elsewhere.
The challenges faced by healthcare workers throughout the pandemic have hit close to home for Scheifele, whose mother was a nurse in his hometown of Kitchener, Ont., and still works in healthcare. The initiative is just a small token of his gratitude toward those on the frontlines of the pandemic.

"I want healthcare workers to know how much I appreciate their work, how much the team appreciates the work that they've been putting in for these years, to not only keep us safe, but to keep all of Manitoba safe," said Scheifele. "I think the most exciting thing for me is to let someone who has been working so hard, who's had such a stressful last two years, enjoy a fun night watching a Jets game."
Healthcare workers from across the province are encouraged to nominate a hard-working colleague for this honour through Shared Health. One lucky healthcare worker will be selected by Shared Health to enjoy dinner and lower bowl seats with a guest for each of the Jets' 41 home games. In addition to in-game recognition and being highlighted on the Winnipeg Jets website and social media channels, the winner will be presented with a Mark Scheifele jersey adorned with a special Healthcare Heroes patch.
The Winnipeg Jets recognized several "Healthcare Heroes" last season and hosted as many as 500 healthcare workers at each of Games 1 and 2 of the Jets' second round Stanley Cup Playoff matchup against the Montreal Canadiens. Shared Health is proud to again partner with Scheifele and the Winnipeg Jets to reward hard-working healthcare professionals with in-person experiences at Canada Life Centre this season.
"As Manitoba came out of our third wave of COVID-19, stories of compassion and hope but also of grief and fatigue were shared by many healthcare workers who had dedicated themselves to the care of Manitobans in the most exceptional of circumstances," said Lanette Siragusa, Chief Nursing Officer, Shared Health. "The opportunity for several hundred fully vaccinated workers to attend Winnipeg Jets playoff games earlier this year recognized their commitment and hard work but also gave hope that a return to normalcy was possible. We are so pleased to be able to partner with the Winnipeg Jets once again, to say thank you to the dedicated healthcare workers who continue to provide care across the province, this time with thousands of other vaccinated Manitobans with them in person."
Healthcare workers will be nominated by their colleagues and peers through a nomination process run by Shared Health. The opportunity is open to any current - or recently retired - healthcare worker. Additional details on the nomination process will be shared with healthcare workers by Shared Health.
