200413 - SCHEIF

School is in session.
The subject? Hockey, of course.
Mark Scheifele joined fellow hockey nerds, Chicago's Patrick Kane and the Islanders' Mathew Barzal on a video call Monday afternoon to discuss their 'hockey obsession' and answer a few burning questions.

Staying busy during the pause has been a challenge for Scheifele who says on the best of days has trouble keeping still.
"I work out as much as I can. Go for runs, go for bike rides, go for walks," said Scheifele.
"Just trying to get outside, trying to get fresh air. It's nice to get outside a little bit. Catching up on a little bit on Netflix, haven't got into gaming yet."

VIDEO CALL | Hockey Obsessions

The point of the conference call put on by the NHL was to get to the bottom of why these particular players became so 'hockey obsessed'.
The Jets' forward admitted he wasn't a big fan of watching games on TV growing up outside of tuning in for Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday's. When he joined the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League, he received some good advice from Hall-of-Famer and Colts coach, Dale Hawerchuk.
"That's the best education you can get right there is watching the NHL and that's when I kind of started falling in love with watching hockey," recalled Scheifele.
"To try and understand the game, how it could benefit my game. That's when it kind of took off and it's been an obsession ever since."
Kane of course, runs into Scheifele often throughout the regular season as a Central Division opponent. The two were teammates at the NHL All-Star Weekend in St. Louis and Kane said his dad was sitting behind the Blackhawks star and Scheifele on the bus heading to Media Night and confirmed their love for the game with a funny story.
"He said we just talked about hockey for 30 minutes," said Kane.
"My dad didn't say a word the whole bus ride but he said it was just cool to tune in and just listen to us just kind of pick apart the game a little bit."
NHL senior vice president of communications John Dellapina moderated the conference call and provided scenarios for each player to answer whom they would like to have in that situation. The trio were not allowed to choose teammates:
Up by a goal, faceoff in your end with ten seconds left. Who is taking the faceoff?
I'm going to go with (Bruins' centre Patrice) Bergeron on either side (of the zone). I've actually had some good nights against him unless you're in Boston and then the stats guys give it to him a little bit," joked Scheifele.
"But when push comes to shove, you put him in a faceoff dot, he's going to take it."

Games on the line and you have a one-on-one situation. Which defenceman do you least want to see?
"I'm going to go with Ryan Suter. We play in Minnesota a ton, you know his angles are so good," said Scheifele.
"When you go one-on-one, you're probably going to try and back him down a little bit, probably try and beat him. His angles are so good, his stick's so good, you're not going to be able to shoot through him, he can block shots. His angles and his feet are so good, he's just so hard to beat."
You are on your off wing and you have your stick ready for a one-timer. Who's the guy you want to have the puck on a two-on-one?
"I'd probably going to want a righty passing to me, a little better angle. He's able to manipulate that D a little bit better," said Scheifele.
"So I'm going to go with (Lightning forward Steven) Stamkos. He's not known for his passing but I've skated with him a lot over the years and he does this little two-on-one pass that's pretty nifty."
Most fearless defenceman at the point that he's going to make a move even though he's the last one back.
"(Preds) Roman Josi by far. He's fearless back there, he'll spin-o-rama two different times. He'll toe drag you, he'll go right down the middle," said Scheifele.
"He's fearless but he's pretty good at it. If he has just an inch on you, he's going to take advantage. He's by far the toughest."

You have a breakaway with the game on the line. Which goalie do you not want to see in the opposing net?
"(Canadiens goalie) Carey Price for sure. He's so calm in the net," said Scheifele.
"His confidence in the net and his ability, he's number one. I definitely don't want to see (him)."
Last game of the season, playoffs are on the line. Game goes to overtime, can't pick two teammates, what two other guys do you want to line up with?
"I'm going to go with (Oilers forwards Connor) McDavid and (Leon) Draisaitl. They'll probably just go a score themselves so I'll just be the defenceman," laughed Scheifele.
"It seems like every game they get to overtime, 30 seconds in Draisaitl has a breakaway or McDavid is on a breakaway or a two-on-one, maybe even a two-on-oh and they're scoring."

2019-20 Mark Scheifele Highlights

Can pick any three players in history. You are not on the ice, which threesome would you like to watch play three-on-three overtime?
"I'm going to throw some of my heroes in there. Stevie Y was my favourite player, so I'll throw Yzerman out there," said Scheifele.
"I'll throw Oatsie (Adam Oates) my other hero and then Dale Hawerchuk."
