WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Jets saw their winless skid go to five games (0-4-1) with a 4-1 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday night at Canada Life Centre. The Jets (44-23-6) have now lost six straight games to the Golden Knights over the past two regular seasons. Sean Monahan scored the only goal for Winnipeg who will host the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night.
INTERESTING CALL
With just over eight minutes left in the game, Nicolas Hague hit Vladislav Namestnikov with an illegal check to the head. Mark Scheifele went over to Hague in defence of his teammate and dropped the gloves with the Golden Knight defenceman. Hague was initially given a five-minute major (for the illegal check to the head) but after further review was given just a minor penalty. Unfortunately, Scheifele got a minor penalty and misconduct for instigating the fight with Hague and missed the remaining time on the clock.
“The referee’s explained to me that he (Hague) didn’t raise his arm and that Vladdy was low, so you live with the call,” said Rick Bowness.
“Whether you agree with it or disagree with it, it doesn’t matter.”
POWER PLAY
The Jets power play woes continued on Thursday night as they had five power plays, including three in the second period. Winnipeg is now 0-for-16 on the power play during their five-game winless streak. They did manage to create some scoring chances, Nikolaj Ehlers had the best chance to give Winnipeg a 2-1 lead at the tail end of their fifth power play but hit the side of the net in the third period.
“I gotta put that in the net and it ended up costing us two points,” said Ehlers.
“For the second power play (unit), we need to support each other more and get more pucks to the net.”
MONAHAN HEATING UP
Sean Monahan scored a huge goal Tuesday night when in the third period, he tied the game up at 3-3 against the Oilers with a redirection of a point shot. Monahan did that again Thursday, this time Nikolaj Ehlers sent a shot toward the net that the Jets centreman tipped over the shoulder of Logan Thompson to even the score at one at 3:31 of the second.
“Yeah, it happens,” said Monahan.
“I mean, you go to the net, it's a great shot by him to see me there kind of alone and nice to get to stick on it.”
