Nolan Baumgartner has been appointed as an assistant coach and Alex Matheson has been appointed as the video coach alongside assistant coach Eric Dubois under head coach Mark Morrison on the Manitoba Moose coaching staff.
Lauer, 55, served as the head coach for the WHL's Edmonton Oil Kings for the past four seasons, winning the WHL Championship in 2021-22. The Humboldt, Sask. native previously served as an assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Lightning (2016-18), Anaheim Ducks (2012-15), and Ottawa Senators (2009-11). Lauer also worked as an assistant coach in the AHL with the Syracuse Crunch (2011-12) and Milwaukee Admirals (2007-09) and his first coaching experience was as an assistant coach for the Kootenay Ice (2002-07).
Lauer was drafted by the New York Islanders in the second round (34th overall) in the 1985 NHL Draft. He played 17 seasons professionally, including parts of nine in the NHL with the Islanders, the Chicago Blackhawks, Ottawa Senators, and Pittsburgh Penguins. Lauer played 323 career NHL games and recorded 111 points (44G, 67A) and 218 PIMs, adding 12 points (7G, 5A) and 24 PIMs in 34 playoff games.
Johnston, 43, served as an assistant coach for the Manitoba Moose for the past five seasons. The Gloucester, Ont. native previously served as the head coach of Carleton University Ravens men's hockey program for seven seasons and coached them to a 129-49-12 record.
As a player, Johnston spent three seasons with the QMJHL's Hull (Gatineau) Olympiques and won the Memorial Cup in 1997. He played for Dalhousie University before starting a professional career with the AHL's Lowell Lock Monsters in 2002-03 where he recorded four points (2G, 2A) and 20 penalty minutes in 17 games. He suited up for 177 games in the ECHL for four different clubs before spending his final pro season with the Edinburgh Capitals in 2004-05.
Baumgartner, 46, served as an assistant coach for the Vancouver Canucks for the past five seasons following five seasons as an assistant coach in the AHL for the Chicago Wolves and the Utica Comets.
Baumgartner was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the first round (10th overall) in the 1994 NHL Draft after a four-year junior career with the WHL's Kamloops Blazers. He won a pair of Memorial Cups with the Blazers (1994 and 1995) and he also won two gold medals with Team Canada at the World Junior Championships (1995 and 1996).
Baumgartner, a native of Calgary, Alta., played parts of 17 seasons professionally, including 143 NHL games for six teams where he recorded 47 points (7G, 40A) and 69 PIMs. He also played for six AHL teams, highlighted by parts of seven seasons with the Manitoba Moose. He ranks second all-time on the Moose in assists (144), third in games played (385), and sixth in points (185).
Matheson, 31, served as the video coach for the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees for the past three seasons. The Ottawa, Ont. native also worked as the assistant general manager for the CCHL's Carleton Place Canadians in 2021-22. He also previously worked four seasons as the video coach for the CCHL's Nepean Raiders (2015-19).
Internationally, Matheson worked as a video coach for Canada's National Men's Under-18 Team summer development camp in 2021 and as a video coach for Team Canada White at the 2021 Under-17 Capital City Challenge.
