Patch Perfect

As Kraken fans mark the important date of Sept. 15 -- that's when the team's official jerseys goes on sale -- there is a yet one more inviting reason to swag up for the first-ever NHL season for Seattle.
Authentic team jerseys will be on sale at all Kraken retail stories (including the soon-to-be opened Kraken Community Iceplex in the Northgate neighborhood plus the Chandler's Cove and Bellevue locations). At those convenient locations, the Adidas-brand jerseys will include the Kraken's inaugural season patch, the same one all Seattle players will wear on the right front shoulder area all season long.

The limited-edition inaugural season patch sports a shape that both peaks upward and angles to the deep. It features the Kraken's widely popular colors, embroidered to distinct details.
"One of our brand design tenets is sea to sky," says Drew Hamlet, Kraken art director. "We wanted to reflect the concept. Not only that the Kraken lives in Puget Sound but throughout the Pacific Northwest."
If you are wondering ... yes, says Hamlet, the mountain peak rising above lettering at the top of the patch is modeled after Mt. Rainier. Is it an "ominous" symbol for opponents facing the Kraken? Your call, but the vote here is a resounding yes.
Astute fans and design aficionados will note the patch has a "S" flow to the design intended to align with the team's primary "S" on the front of the jersey. The "S" flow angles similarly at the mountain peaks, water waves and deepest portion of the patch.
"We were hoping for the same geometry," says Hamlet, "and the lettering is our custom fonts."
One note about patch placement on the right front shoulder. NHL teams can name one captain, who wears a "C" on his left front shoulder of the jersey (Kraken GM Ron Francis captained three franchises: Hartford, Pittsburgh, Carolina). Up to three alternate captains wear an "A" on the left front shoulder.
