Kraken Trade for Defenseman

Looking to add roster depth for the postseason race that restarts Tuesday, the Kraken traded for San Jose defenseman Jaycob Megna Sunday, sending a 2023 fourth-round draft choice (Seattle's choice) to the Sharks. The 6-foot-6, 220-pound defenseman has played in 48 games this season, notching a goal and 11 assists.
"Jaycob has shown with his play this season that he is a responsible defenseman that can be relied on in all situations," said Seattle Kraken General Manager Ron Francis. "He provides welcome depth to our defensive group and we are happy to have him join our organization."

Megna, 30, has appeared in 135 NHL games over five seasons with Anaheim and San Jose. The Ducks drafted him in the seventh round of the 2012 NHL Draft. He is averaging 19 minutes of time on ice per game this season and posted similar numbers when called up from the American Hockey League in January 2022 to appear in 44 games for San Jose. In fact, the American D-man has notched minutes between 20 to 24 minutes of time on ice since early December, clearly earning the trust of new head coach David Quinn.
The Kraken have two fourth-round picks in the upcoming 2023 NHL Draft, their own and a fourth-rounder acquired from Colorado in 2021 in exchange for forward Kurtis MacDermid (Seattle's expansion draft pick from the Avalanche). Francis and the SEA hockey operations group have until June 15 to indicate which pick will be moved to San Jose.
Megna, who played youth hockey in the Chicago area before stops in the USHL and NCAA Division I Nebraska-Omaha, has played 368 regular season games and another 39 playoff contests for four American Hockey League teams. His brother, Jayson, 33, has appeared in 37 games for Colorado and Anaheim this season and has 185 overall NHL appearances.
