MacDermid was one of 12 defensemen selected during last Wednesday's NHL Expansion Draft. MacDermid was selected from Los Angeles. For an NHL game, coaches generally dress six or seven defensemen and might have eight or nine on the active NHL roster of 23 players.
Last Thursday, the Kraken traded forward Tyler Pitlick (selected from the Arizona Coyotes) in exchange for a 2022 fourth-round draft pick.
An undrafted free agent in 2012, MacDermid played 118 NHL games over the last four seasons with the Kings, splitting time with OHL Ontario. After two seasons as a regular on the blue line with the Reign and having made positive progress at the conclusion of his rookie contract, re-signed a one-year, two-way contract extension in July 2017.
MacDermid is the son of former NHL player Paul MacDermid and born in Quebec City during his father's stint with the Quebec Nordiques (now Colorado Avalanche). Older brother, Lane, played in the NHL for Boston, Dallas and Calgary.
