Seattle Kraken Agree to Terms with Brian Dumoulin on Two-Year Contract

SEATTLE, Wash. - July 1, 2023 -Today, the Seattle Kraken (@SeattleKraken) announced that they have agreed to terms with defenseman Brian Dumoulin on a two-year contract ($3.15 million AAV).

"Brian is a two-time Stanley Cup champion and coming off of his most productive season offensively," said Seattle Kraken General Manager Ron Francis. "He has been a consistent, reliable defenseman throughout his career and we are happy to welcome him to Seattle."

Dumoulin, 31, totaled 25 points (one goals, 24 assists) in 82 regular-season games for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2022-23, setting career highs in assists and points. He also set a career best with 23 even-strength points, which ranked second among Pittsburgh blueliners. At six-foot-four, 207 pounds, Dumoulin finished the regular season with 123 hits and a team-leading 142 blocked shots, both of which were the second-highest totals of his career. During 5-on-5 play last season, Dumoulin was on the ice for 66 goals for, which ranked fourth on Pittsburgh's roster and was the third-most of his career. The 2022-23 regular season marked the seventh-consecutive year in which he averaged more than 20 minutes of ice time per game, finishing the season ranked third among Penguins skaters with 20:38 of average ice time.

The defenseman has totaled 139 points (19 goals, 120 assists) in 546 regular-season NHL games, all of which he has played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, serving as one of the team's alternate captains for the last four seasons. Dumoulin's 546 regular-season games played with the Penguins rank 15th in franchise history, one spot above Seattle Kraken General Manager Ron Francis (533). Since becoming a full-time NHLer in 2015-16, Dumoulin is the second-highest scoring Pittsburgh defenseman, trailing only Kris Letang (406 points in 514 games). His 799 blocked shots since 2015-16 top all Penguins skaters and his 750 hits are the third-most on Pittsburgh's roster during that span.

Dumoulin has appeared in 81 Stanley Cup Playoff games with Pittsburgh, totaling 25 points (four goals, 21 assists) while winning back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017 with the Penguins. He ranks 10th in Penguins Stanley Cup Playoff history in games played and sixth among the franchise's defensemen in both postseason assists (tied) and points. Dumoulin has also played in 188 career AHL games - all with the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins - totaling 78 points (15 goals, 63 assists) and adding 23 points (five goals, 18 assists) in 38 AHL playoff games.

Prior to his professional career, Dumoulin played three seasons (2009-10 to 2011-12) of collegiate hockey at Boston College, totaling 83 points (11 goals, 72 assists) in 123 NCAA games. His collegiate career saw him earn several accolades, beginning with his freshman year in which he was named to the Hockey East 2

All-Rookie Team. His sophomore year, Dumoulin was named to the NCAA East All-American First Team, to the Hockey East First All-Star Team and the Hockey East Best Defensive Defenseman. His final year at Boston College, the defenseman earned NCAA East All-American First Team honors, was named the Hockey East Best Defensive Defenseman, was named a Hockey East First Team All-Star and the New England Best Defenseman all en route to being named a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, presented annually to the top men's collegiate hockey player. He also earned several team awards including the Norman F. Dailey Memorial Award in 2012 as his team's most valuable player and the Bernie Burke Award as BC's most valuable freshman in 2010.

A native of Biddeford, Maine, Dumoulin represented the United States at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship, bringing home a bronze medal after notching two assists in six tournament games. He was originally selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round (51st overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft.
