One: Burakovsky Out Six to Eight Weeks

The news on Andre Burakovsky didn’t sound hopeful from Dave Hakstol’s comments to the media after Saturday’s loss to the New York Rangers in which the Kraken forward fell awkwardly into the boards after a hit from NYR captain Jacob Trouba. The team announced Sunday that Burakovsky underwent a successful procedure for an upper-body injury. He will be out of the lineup for an estimated six to eight weeks.

Burakovsky was a star player in Thursday’s win over Carolina, picking up two assists and looking like the player who led the team in scoring during the first half of last season before a groin injury ended his season.

In the short term, NHL-tested veteran Devin Shore was called up from AHL affiliate Coachella Valley last week. He traveled with the team Sunday en route to Detroit and will likely slot into the lineup with fourth-liners Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Kailer Yamamoto for Tuesday’s matchup in Detroit. Rookie Tye Kartye moves up to play with Matty Beniers and Jordan Eberle while the Yanni Gourde line skates with Jared McCann and Eeli Tolvanen on opposite wings. Joey Daccord, who has been in net for all three standings points, gets the start in goal (assuming being the first goalie off the ice at morning skate is likely the starter).

Two: Keeping it Special

The Kraken have a 93.8 success rate on killing penalties, which ranks fifth-best among the 32 NHL squads. Seattle is also one of only five teams that sport an even or positive plus-minus rating as a power play unit. The others are Colorado, Dallas, Calgary, and Philadelphia. Losing penalty killer Brandon Tanev (week-to-week) was a blow but veteran center Pierre-Edouard Bellemare has excelled on the PK and his first goal for the Kraken was a shorthanded score in last Thursday’s win over Carolina (a victory fans might want to keep close to mind on how to navigate a successful road that moves to Raleigh, NC, Thursday, Tampa Bay Saturday and Florida Monday.

Detroit, on the other hand, is second overall in the NHL on converting power play chances with 39.1 percent. Clearly, something’s gotta give.

Three: Know Your Foe: Detroit (5-1-0) on Five-Game Win Streak

The Red Wings trade for Alex DeBrincat has worked out spectacularly to date. The former Chicago and Ottawa scoring star has racked up eight goals in six games, including a hat trick Sunday in a 6-2 home win over Calgary. DeBrincat has 10 points at home and 12 overall. His linemate, Detroit captain Dylan Larkin, has 11 points, and fellow linemate Lucas Raymond picked up three assists Sunday.

Detroit has won five straight games since losing its season opener. It’s the best start for the Original Six franchise since 2011-12 when forwards Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg and defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom were at the heart of an impressive core of Stanley Cup winners.

Former Kraken forward Daniel Sprong, now getting eight to 12 minutes on the Red Wings third line, scored a goal in each of his first two games with Detroit and has logged two assists over the last two games.
