In their second game of the Prospect Showcase, the Tampa Bay Lightning showcased their depth in a 6-5 shootout victory over the Carolina Hurricanes at AdventHealth Center Ice.
The Lightning were led by a pair of prospects who didn't play in a 5-2 win over Nashville a day earlier. Clearwater native and camp invitee Avery Winslow scored a goal 36 seconds into the contest to give the Lightning an early lead in a game they never trailed. Fellow invitee Xavier Cormier netted a power-play goal about five minutes later to extend Tampa Bay's advantage to 2-0 and was true with his shootout attempt - the first attempt for either team - for the game-deciding goal.

Maxim Cajkovic was also successful for Tampa Bay in the five-round shootout. Hugo Alnefelt, who did not start Sunday's game but entered midway through the second period and finished, stopped all five Carolina attempts to seal the win.
The Lightning have yet to trail at any point through two games at the Prospect Showcase.
"I think in general we had a good game," assistant coach Gilles Bouchard said. "We had a good start for sure. We played a good first period. We were first on the puck, and we scored two goals from the blue line with good net presence. I think the second period was a little tougher for us. Carolina bounced back very hard, and we were second on the puck and we let up too many scoring chances. But the guys showed character in the third with a better third period. In general, I'm very pleased with the way we played today."
Tampa Bay moves to 2-0 at the Prospect Showcase and is the only unbeaten team remaining among the four squads participating. The Lightning can close out a perfect tournament with a victory Tuesday in the Showcase finale against the Florida Panthers (1 p.m. puck drop at AdventHealth Center Ice).
"We have great guys in the locker room," Cormier said. "We have fun. We work hard in practices. We just work hard and have fun together and play the best we can."
Carolina got a goal from Seth Jarvis in the first period to cut Tampa Bay's lead to 2-1, but the Lightning went back in front by two scores after defenseman Jack Thompson beat Canes goalie Beck Warm on a blue-line shot with just 37.9 seconds remaining in the opening stanza.
The Bolts pushed the lead to 4-1 three minutes into the second period after Lipanov finished off a well-worked 2-on-1 rush, Cormier saucing a timely pass off to his right for the Russian forward to bury.
"He's a pretty fast guy," Lipanov said of Cormier and the connection the two had on the rush. "He makes plays."
After Carolina scored twice to cut the Lightning lead to 4-3 on goals from Joey Keane and Seth Jarvis, Lipanov netted the second of his two goals on an impressive tip from the lower left circle. Bolts defenseman and 2018 Third Round selection Dmitri Semykin sent in a shot from beyond the circle, and, with his back to goal, Lipanov was able to tip the puck up and over the shoulder of Warm at the far post to give the Lightning a 5-3 advantage.
"We have that Russian connection," Lipanov, a 2017 Third Round pick and a veteran among the Lightning prospects, joked.
David Cotton scored to get Carolina closer at 5-4 with 3:21 left in the second period and Blake Murphy sniped a shot from the right circle with 13:55 to go in regulation to tie the contest.
After neither team was able to score down the stretch of regulation or during a five minute 3-on-3 overtime, one in which the Lightning were awarded a power play early in the session, the Lightning prevailed 2-0 in the shootout for the victory.
Cormier went first in the shootout and said he already knew which move he was going to attempt out of the three or four in his repertoire as he hopped over the wall and skated onto the puck.
"I have to pick my move before because it doesn't work if I don't," he said. "That (move) was my favorite one."
Alnefelt denied all five Carolina attempts. Cajkovic was successful on his try in the fourth round.
Lipanov (2nd), Jaydon Dureau (3rd) and Jack Finley (5th) each had their attempts stopped.
Amir Miftakhov started in net for the Lightning and made nine saves on 12 shots after a 35-of-37 save performance in Saturday's win. He exited the Carolina game with the Lightning ahead 5-3. Alnefelt stopped 14-of-16 shots in relief in his first action of the Showcase.
Lipanov led the way for the Lightning with two goals and an assist.
Cormier (goal, assist) and Ryan Jones (2 assists) also had multi-point games for the Bolts.
