The Lightning defenseman exited after blocking a shot up around his head
Tampa Bay defenseman Dan Girardi suffered a scary injury in the second period of Tampa Bay's road trip finale in Detroit's Little Caesars Arena.
Tweet from @iyer_prashanth: Girardi takes a Martin Frk slapshot up high and he drops immediately. Just now getting to his feet pic.twitter.com/bo1eQojsux With the Red Wings trailing 2-1 and searching for the equalizer on the power play, Detroit's Martin Frk lined up a one-timer from the left circle that sailed and appeared to hit Girardi up high with 6:31 to go in the second period. Girardi immediately fell face first onto the ice as trainers from both teams rushed out to his aid. With concerned Tampa Bay and Detroit players watching, Girardi remained down on the ice for a couple minutes before sitting up under his own power. Girardi skated off the ice with some help from Steven Stamkos and Victor Hedman and headed immediately back to the locker room. Girardi will not return to the game, but initial reports indicate he is okay. Girardi had a major impact before being forced from the game. He scored his third goal of the season to provide the opening tally and picked up the primary assist on Tyler Johnson's goal for his third multi-point night with the Bolts and 34th of his career We'll update this story as we receive more information on Girardi's condition.
