hero feb. 27

TAMPA BAY - The Tampa Bay Lightning honored Kristen Brown as the 10th Lightning Community Hero this season during the first period of tonight's game against the Dallas Stars. Brown, who received a $50,000 donation from the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program, presented by Jabil, will donate the money to TRIBE Seminole Heights, Seminole Heights United Methodist Church, Instruments for Life and Seniors in Service.

Brown founded Tribe - Seminole Heights, an innovative non-profit community center that provides a safe haven for children of Central Tampa. Under her leadership, Tribe offers more than 50 low-cost activities weekly, including art and music, cooking and baking, and even coding. All the activities are conducted by a team of dedicated volunteers.
During the pandemic, Brown has also offered contact-free art supply pick-ups and virtual tutoring sessions to keep children engaged. To date, Brown and Tribe have served more than 800 Central Tampa families, providing them with vital resources to safely learn and play outside of the school setting. Her compassion fuels her drive to build a brighter future for those in need.
Brown becomes the 421st Lightning Community Hero since Jeff and Penny Vinik introduced the Lightning Community Hero program in 2011-12 with a $10 million, five-season commitment to the Tampa Bay community. Through this evening's game, in total, the Lightning Foundation has granted $22 million to more than 750 different nonprofits in the Greater Tampa Bay area. During the summer of 2016, the Viniks announced that the community hero program will give away another $10 million over the next five seasons.
